..."You will watch the backs of the men next to you as they will watch yours, no matter the color, or by what name they call God..." * * * ***THE MANSIONS OF THE LORD*** from the movie "We Were Soldiers" To fallen soldiers let us sing Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing Our broken brothers let us bring To the Mansions of the Lord No more bleeding, no more fight No prayers pleading through the night Just divine embrace, eternal light In the Mansions of the Lord Where no mothers cry and no children weep We will stand and guard though the angels sleep While through the ages safely keep The Mansions of the Lord "A couple of hundred yards away, there was the headquarters of an infantry regiment and on numerous occasions during the sixteen day battle, we saw how they crept out to bury their dead during lulls in the fighting. So the rows of crosses increased day after day, until in no time at all it had become quite a sizeable cemetery. Just as John described it, it was not uncommon early in the morning to hear the larks singing in the brief silences between the bursts of the shells and the returning salvos of our own nearby guns." Lieutenant Colonel Edward Morrison In Flanders FieldsbyJohn McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Flags today in tribute wave For those loyal ones who gave Of their youth, their hopes, their might For a cause they knew was right. Morning bells sound their call, Pause and say a prayer for all-- All who served valiantly That men might be ever free. Toll of bells, drums' slow beat-- Silence falls in every street. In each heart swells the plea: Keep us safe, but keep us free! We remember the sacrifices of all of you who have put on the uniform to serve in the United States military. We honor you, our veterans, who have proven your heroism and love of country time and time again. You have consistently defended our ideals across the globe; and you are an inspiration to those who defend America today. More than a million of you have died in service to America; and more than a million and a half have been wounded. Some of you have sustained serious injuries in combat and now some of you also live with disabilities. We in the United States of America, will always be grateful for the noble sacrifices made by you and we honor and respect you for your service. We can never adequately repay you. YOU, our veterans, are living examples of the timeless truth that freedom is not free. Thank you! In Memoriam also for Edward LaDouce of my home town of Auburn, New York who died in WW11. I was a baby and never knew you, Uncle Ed. But they told me the story. Thank you for what you did for me, Sharon * * * * * "The front line makes more Christians than any churches" ~ S SG Edward H.
