SUZUKI KATANA YAMAHA 650 SPECIAL KAWASAKI EX500
2000 SUZUKI 1981 YAMAHA 1991 KAWASAKI

I love riding! The Yamaha 650 Special was my first motorcycle. It served me well, that is when the battery was charged. Other times I was pulling all the non-important fuses (directionals and headlights) and kickstarting it to get it home. I spent more trying to get the electrical problem fixed on this bike than I did for the bike itself. Still today it has it's issues, thanks to less than competent mechanics. I did manage to take my road test on this one and get a thousand miles put on it before I got fed up and purchased the EX500.

The EX500 was a good deal that I got from a friend when he moved to California. I rode it for a season and then he moved back. Ever since he has been in the process of buying it back.

Finally I got up the courage to go to a dealer, get a full warranty, and buy a "used" bike. The Katana is really the lowest form of sport bike on the road. It was perfect for me because it is a hybrid between a cruiser type bike and a sport bike giving me the chance to get used to the differences. Also its a bit less powerful than most of the bikes I was looking at, but I realized the 3 sec difference in 0-60 didn't make much difference to me. Besides, I am much less likely to lay on the gas and end up on my back on this one. It had 1,100 miles on it when I got it, last weekend I put it up over 3,000.

The Shiney Side Goes Down
In 3 years of riding I had never dropped any of the bikes, but recently I had a bit of an embarrasing accident. Turning into a parking space I locked up the front brake and it pulled the bike down to the right. Only having the brake and the gas to hold onto to keep it from going down all the way, I had to let it touch the ground. No harm done really, a small scratch on the right side and the exhaust, I can touch it up. The sad thing was that it occurred in the parking lot of a Motorcycle shop, in front of the garage with at least 6 fellow bikers looking on. I am sure they were all secretly laughing to themselves. And my good friend took his helmet off and took his time to help me lift it back up. So thanks to him that wonderful moment lasted much longer than it should have (same friend that still owes me for the bike). Oh well life goes on and nobody was hurt. The table below lists some facts about each of the bikes.
