Current Project: The high infant mortality rates in the outlying villages around Vavatenina constitute the desperate need for midwives to be properly trained and dispersed where they are most needed. The desired outcome of the project will be the successful deployment of 36 midwives to 30 different villages, indirectly benefitting 9750 women. The proposed training would take place 11-15 December, 2006. The trainees would meet in Vavatenina and have their meals and lodgings paid for by the PCPP. The training they would receive would contain information on safe and sanitary delivery practices and emergency management as well as pre- and post-natal care. We wish Patrick Gannon the best of luck with his project! Since 1983-84 Corcoran High School of Syracuse, New York, has annually funded a Peace Corps Partnership Project. Over the years we have raised aproximatly $100,000 and funded 18 partnerships, including the construction of 6 primary schools, 2 Wells, 2 Maternity Hospitals, and the first school for the blind in all of central Africa. This year's project is the 24th funded through the efforts of the students of Corcoran High School and Roberts Elementary School. It is the 22nd funded through the sale of student drawn notecards. In addition to the annual publication of student drawn note cards, students participate in cross-cultural exchanges with the villagers, exchanging letters, photos, and artifacts. [Click for More] |
