In this complex crime drama, Martin Scorcese utilizes an all-star cast to explore both sides of that haven for hedonists, honeymooners and hustlers: Las Vegas. Basing it all on a novel by Nicholas Pileggi, who also wrote the screenplay, the film concentrates on three main characters: Sam Rothstein, an extraordinary gambler, hence his nickname, "Ace," who has been hired by Kansas City gangsters to oversee their casino; Rothstein's volatile best friend and private thug Nicky Santoro, and Ginger McKenna, a gold digging con artist who marries Ace for his money. It is she who becomes the catalyst for trouble. When Ace fails to satisfy her, she turns to Nicky for solace. When that doesn't work out, she decides to destroy them both. The story of their downfall, from their pinnacle of power during the '70s and '80s, is told in flashback from each of their viewpoints.
