Tazz, a former ECW World Heavyweight Champion, signed with the WWF in the Fall of 1999. His debut was preceded by his symbol interrupting various wrestlers' entrance videos. He finally made his debut as Kurt Angle's mystery opponent at the Royal Rumble. He choked out Angle with his Tazzmission and speculation abounded as to whether or not the hold was legal. A few weeks later, he was attacked by The Big Bossman and Prince Albert. He beat the Bossman by DQ at No Way Out when Albert interfered. They beat him down for a few minutes, but Tazz refused to stay down. The WWF soon pulled the plug on this angle, and Tazz was back wrestling with Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho. Tazz then feuded with Angle's friend Bob Backlund. He competed in the Hardcore Battle Royal at WrestleMania, winning the belt twice and losing it just as fast. He won it again for a few seconds a few weeks later, and failed to regain it after that. On his day off, he went back to ECW and won the World Title from a leaving Mike Awesome, and lost to WWF Champ Triple H in a non-title match. He was injured shortly after that, and was out until June. He came back and randomly attacked people, earning the fans' hatred. When he tried to bully Jim Ross, Jerry "The King" Lawler stepped in and waffled Tazz. They had a match at SummerSlam where Lawler won after Ross hit Tazz with a candy jar. Tazz beat Lawler in a rematch at Unforgiven when his pal Raven intefered. They teamed for awhile but broke up not too long after. He was given an announcing role on Sunday Night Heat after some impressive showings at an episode of Smackdown, alongside Michael Cole.

Tazz continued his announcing role into 2001, even more so when Jerry Lawler quit the WWF and Tazz replaced him on Smackdown. He got fed up with the RTC and teamed with The APA to beat them at WrestleMania. Tazz continued to announce and only wrestle occassionally. He was entered in the King of the Ring tournament, but failed to qualify against Rhyno. Tazz joined several former ECW stars with WCW to form the Alliance, but lost to Tajiri at Invasion. He became Steve Austin's personal whipping boy, but was the only one to stand up to Austin when it looked like he might be headed back to the WWF's side. A few days before the winner-take-all match at Survivor Series, Tazz choked out Paul Heyman with the Tazzmission after he made disparaging comments about Tazz in a tirade about Vince McMahon. McMahon appreciated it so much that he hired back Tazz even after the Alliance lost and was kickd off TV.
