Saturday February12th 1999 @ Ohio University, Athens, OH
First out of town gig for the band.  We are all looking forward to this one:  new venue, new audience, new set.  The beautiful thing about out of town shows is that the audience has no preconceptions to hinder their experience of the performance, therefore more likely to be receptive to the concepts we present them.

Friday  December10th 1999 @ Victorian's Midinight Cafe
Back home after a 3 month hiatus.  Looking forward to this one because we all truly love this venue!  Always a laid back gig allowing us to stretch out and explore our ambient and spacey tendencies...

Friday  October15th 1999 @ Bernie's
Jim Shepard memorial show with Charles Ciccarelo, Mike Rep, Ron House, My Uncle Wayne, et. al.  Was a show, as stated below, no one wanted to do.  We do it for his memory,  dear and important person to many.  We only did a 15 minute (approx.) show:
   Zawinal
   Clouds
Leslie (last name unknown) played keys with us like she did last year for Jim's wake.  She'll have to be invited back again and again.  Brian was unable to make it as he was in Vegas on business.

Thursday  September16th 1999 @ Northberg Tavern
New scene for us here.  Played a short set (1/2 an hour) of largely free-form spacerock including these songs (standards by now):
   Zawinal
   Afro-blue
   Winter is Upon Us
Medusa/Cybernaut (used to be titled Cyborg)
   free-form jam
Rodney Riffle and Bob Jancowicz joined us for this one on bass and sax respectively.  Pretty Sneaky Sis did a great job opening for us and were joined by Kane on keys for a rendition of "Space is the Place", a classic Sun Ra tune and "Transformer Man", a song by Brian.

Friday  August27th 1999 @ Victorian's Midnight Cafe
Yet another chance to stretch out and travel the spaceways, unfortunately we had to cancel on this one as Brian was busy with family responsibilities.  We instead organized a DIY gig in the Chicken Shack (our temporary rehearsal space).  Brian came over and we were joined by Bob Jancowicz (sax) for a late night gig for the neighborhood.  Did stunning versions of standards like "Zawinal", "Winter is Upon Us", and for a treat Antoine of Pretty Sneaky Sis sang on a cookin' "Space is the Place" (Sun Ra).

Friday  July30th 1999 @ Victorian's Midnight Cafe
Brian was away on business during this show so Pretty Sneaky Sis backed us up as our rhythm section.  Stretched out for a 2 set show, the first of which was just Chris, Kane, and Scott (PSS played 2nd set).  Was a rather difficult show as we weren't quite comfortable playing w/ PSS at the time.  Despite this, we were received well (as usual) by the venue, always one of our favourite venues.

Monday  July12th 1999 @ Little Brothers
Our first time playing at Little Brothers.  Opened for Hard Black Thing; Wilfoster played the show also.  We were rather unprepared for this gig (we were asked to do it 2 hours before showtime!) but were able to pull off a strong 1/2 hour set:
   ambient vibe loop
   Winter is Upon Us
   Afro-blue
   Clouds
   The Sphynx
It was an exhilerating to play a loud set where the soundman actually knows what he's doing!  Thank you Jeff from the Action Family.  Backstage entertainment provided by Stu Sinn (of HBT) whose jokes and skewered insights always provide for an interesting time.

Friday  July9th 1999 @ Victorian's Midnight Cafe
Misunderstanding and confusion, didn't happen.

Friday May7th 1999 @ Victorian's Midnight Cafe
First time at what has proven to be one of the friendliest venues, very receptive to our brand of space-jazz.  Played 2 1-hour sets, so we took advantage of this opportunity to stretch out and explore the nether reaches of avant soundscapes.  Joe Laffere (guitar) and Pam Immel (flute, keys) joined us at various points on the map to boost us to newer levels.  The first time we played what was to become "Zawinal".  Originally a  compositional idea by Kane called "Drone in D", it was molded into a more interesting tune with the help of Scott and a late-night listening of Weather Report's "Heavey Weather" and Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way". Joe Zawinal's electric piano stylings were a strong influence on the way Scott was to approach the song, and it keeps getting better!  First time we toyed with pre-recorded tapes in a live setting.  Tapes used were a portion of a sermon from a Texan cult, Japanese language tutor tapes ("Where is the bathroom?"), and portions of Jim Jones speaking.  Adding to the mix were the sounds of the cappacino machine, people playing pool, and the siren of a passing ambulence.

Friday April30th 1999 @ Bourbon Street Lounge
Played with Nantucket Sleigh Ride and Rodney Riffle.  Getting a good sound here was difficult because there was no PA and the  beer was served in large Mason jars!  Joe Laffere joined us on bass when Rodney wasn't playing.  Joe used to play in The Cajun Killers with Scott once upon a time ago.  The sax player of NSR (don't remember what his name was) sat in with us also which helped a great deal with "Mu", a Sun Ra song.  Among the songs on the list were:
   Winter is Upon Us
   Mu
   Clouds
Great turnout for this one, a real pleasure to play for a number of our friends!

Friday February12th 1999 @ Acme Art Gallery
It snowed that night and almost no one showed up, but we really got a good chance to stretch out and let things just happen. This was the beginnings of a new sound where silence and minimalist ideas were explored as well as adding elements of multimedia (we played none of our standards).  First time we broke out "Mu" by Sun Ra, also for laughs Scott threw in snippets of the Charlie Brown theme!  Probably the first venue that appreciates our aesthetics!

December28th 1998 @ Bernie's
By now Scott was really beginning to fit in and assert his style on the rest of the band.  My Uncle Wayne, Chauncy, and Nantucket Sleigh Ride played this gig too.  Set list was:
   Cosmic Dust
   Quentin Tarrentino
   Metaphysics
At this point (or there-abouts) NSR joined us onstage.   The bar wouldn't allow 4 bands to play so the 2 bands aggreed to share a set.  They sat in with us for the remainder of the gig which included:
   Afro- blue
   Sweet Leaf
   The Secret Tribe
   My Head
   Sticks
   a couple of NSR's songs
Chauncy was a band of high school kids from Chicago, a punk band.  Their comments on our set were quite ironic.  They mentioned that we were just a "sound" and that we would be "dime-a-dozen" in Chicago.  That's just the way THEIR sound is like in Columbus!  Wish we were from Chicago...

December17th 1998 @ Bourbon Street Cafe
We were asked to do this gig a couple of days before the show so Scott was unable to make it.  Played with Nantucket Sleigh Ride and 2 other bands.  The show was interesting in that all the bands seemed to share a vibe.  A guy named Adam sat in with us on this one.  He opened the set with ambient guitar textures then we fell in with a scorching version of:
   Quentin Tarrentino
Winter is Upon Us (a very early version)
   Medusa
The owner's ears were blistered, so we got cut off.  Damn-it!

December8th 1998 @ Bernie's
This was the Hawthorne Debut for Scott. All in all a good Effect.  We played a 2-set show, the first 45 minutes devoted to our more song-oriented material:
   Cosmic Dust
   Metaphysics
   Quentin Tarrentino
   Winter is Upon Us
   You're On Display
   Afro-blue
   Medusa/Cyborg
The second set was improvised out of ambience, space-blues, and free-form music.  Off the cuff.  This was the first time we did "Afro-blue" (a song by Mongo Santamaria popularized by John Coltrane), sprung on us by Scott rather capriciously.  Part of the fun of playing in this band, SURPRISES!

October22nd 1998 @ Bernie's
Jim  Shepard wake, no one wanted to do this gig.

September4th 1998 @ High 5
First gig as The Hawthorne Effect.  Played with 110 (Squidfish, Rudy K., Klaus Theis,  Papparrat), and the Eden Tree.  Foxfire were supposed to play but  flyers are as reliable McDonalds' wrist watches! The set included:
Toys (ancient HE song we never play anymore)
   Quentin Tarrentino
   You're On Display

May17th 1998 @ Bernie's
Primordial HE.  Lineup was Brian, Chris, Kane, Nathan Weaver,  and Brett (last name unknown).  Played with Rodney Riffle and The Large Mouth Bastards.   Sonic legends of storieis to come...
