Is a refugee from the Hard Black Thing and vows never to repeat
the style of HBT. Is he successful? Well, maybe if he turned around on
stage and faced the audience once in awhile. Plays guitar (with several
pedals), moog and other synthesizers, violin, and general aleatoricness.
All in all a highly creative spirit.

Also a HBT refugee, a nontraditional drummer who doesn't own a set, but several
drums found in different locations including my neighbor's garbage. Brian is a
very tribal drummber that we enjoy very much and is perfectly suited for our sound. He also possesses a charisma that sometimes enhances our live shows, like shaking a tambourine in tattooed love-boys' faces underground at Bernie's.

Came to Columbus five years ago in search of nothing
in particular, and has certainly found it. Plays trumpet (with and without
fx board), wooden flute, the LT 1985, homemade drum (polyethelyne head),
three-tone noise maker, and other toys. Accused of excessive Swiss Roll addiction, Maryhaven isn't prepared for the likes of him.

Formerly with bands from so far back, I was in grade school, he fills in the
talent gap and completes the part of sound that makes us legitimate.
Looks like he's 12 years old, plays keys, electronic drums, and assorted
rythmic looping devices. Overall, a high level theoritician with chihuaua overtones and is currently memorizing theme songs from every cheesy TV show in existance from the 70's(!).

Who would have guessed we would become a Nintendo game cartridge to be sold at 80's retro stores? Go figure! The Hawthorne Effect is a band in search of a new sound, therefore it is difficult to explain to people when they ask what kind of music we play. (If you ask me categories dont even belong in music anyways, except for the people who have to file records in a record shop.) There are definately rock influences mixed with several different other elements. One of those elements can be described as ambiance, as a big influence in my sound can be heard in the music of Brian Eno, the music on ECM records, and the music on the radio program, echoes (www.echoes.org) which can be heard on 90.5 WCBE weekday nights from 10 - 12 PM on National Public Radio. Kane plays a lot of spacey and random-like sounds that I hear in the music of Stockhausen, John Cage, and Sun Ra. There is a sense of dynamics moving from the spacey, ambient forms to the more rock based influences and nothing is ever played the same twice. Also there is a bit of a free jazz influence as all members are big fans of Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman, not to mention the trumpet influences of Donald Byrd and Don Cherry. Other influences of mine relevant to this band include pianists Thelonius Monk, Mc Coy Tyner, Paul Bley, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy. The sound can be described as "Space Jazz", having similarities to the music of Sun Ra, a spacey echoey sound mixed with free jazz. Other main influences include Sun Ra, Brian Eno, Stockhausen, Soft Machine, Can, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Einstürzende Neubauten, Ghost, Kraftwerk, Last Exit, and King Crimson, not to mention Jim Shepard's V3 who played several rehearsals with the band during it's infancy period. It can also be noted that Kane played with the band Ghost while he was still playing with the band The Hard Black Thing and has done several gigs with HBT alongside Jim Shepard before this band formed. Kane also appeared on one of Jim's most recent CD's "Motorcycle Movie" and Lorca's Grave (self titled cd) which was V3, Klaus Theis, and Charles Cicerella.
