Welcome to Elaine's Second Greenland Homepage!

The latest Greenland-edition website from Elaine's trip to Greenland July 23-28, 2000.

Here are a few more Greenland pictures. More will keep coming, so stay tuned...
David BoPrie is on the left, I'm in the middle, and that's Vijay Suchdeo on the right.

We're standing in front of the LC-130 that was about to carry us back to Sondestromford (sorry no 'dots' available), aka Kangerlussuaq. This plane had been stranded at Summit with five flight crew members and five media team members for three days. Originally the crew was dropping the few of us off at Summit and intended to stay just three hours... (and the media folks came along for a 'three hour tour'...) Anyway, after three attempts (and an hour and a hlaf), we were able to successfully make it off the ground and into the skies. We were unable to make the other scheduled stop at another polar cap site due to the unseasonably warm temperatures (temps in the upper 20's/30's + sunlight = lots of ice!), but made it safely back to Kanger Thursday, then to Schenectedy, NY and eventually Detroit, MI on Friday.

Here's another shot, this one back at Kangerlussuaq. This is a picture of the river that flows off of the polar ice cap and into Sondestromford. No need to worry about contaminated water there--it was delicious!

This is the "Big House", a combined double trailer that contained a kitchen, living/dining room, toilet, shower, and washing machine (all three to be used sparingly), and radio HQ. Three of our other team members hooked up a satellite-based system to give the folks at summit their first ever telephone and internet access!
