Welcome to Gisborne and the East Coast

Gisborne is the first wine region in the world to see the new day's sun. It is a beautiful and isolated part of New Zealand - warm and sunny, steeped in Maori culture and tradition, and memorable for its sandy beaches, isolated coasts, rolling hills and fields of corn and fruit.

Some of New Zealand's best Chardonnay grapes are grown in Gisborne, although there are only a hand-full of local wine producers. Excellent examples of Chenin Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Riesling are also produced here.

Regional Vintage Guide

The table below indicates the quality of wine vinatges in the Gisborne Region for each of the past ten years. Please note that the information in this table is indicative only and that the quality of grapes grown may vary from one vineyard to another.

Recommended Wineries

Millton is a wonderful winery to visit. James Millton's passion for Chenin Blanc, Riesling and organic wine production is infectious. The vineyard has Bio-Gro certification, meaning that no synthetic sprays are used in growing its grapes. Millton's Te Arai vineyard Chenin Blanc is a top example of its type, with the 1987, 1988 and 1994 vintages all being judged chanpion other white wine at the prestigious Air New Zealand Wine Awards. The style of this wine varies depending on the season, although it tends to be characterised by honey and almond flavours. Millton's Opou vineyard Riesling is another top wine gaining gold in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1994, 1998 and 1999. Millton also produces a very good Chardonnay

Revington Vineyard produces top quality Chardonnay, albeit in very small quantities. Volumes range from 200 to 350 cases, although it is not made every year. Ross Revington purchased the vineyard in 1987. Consultant wine maker David Pearce makes Revington Vineyards award winning Chardonnay offsite in Marlborough.

Montana Gisborne Winery was established in 1973. Montana has 258 hectares of mature vines under cultivation in Gisborne. This compares to Milton's 20 hectares and Revington's 4.5 hectares. Much of the wine produced in the Gisborne Winery is Chardonnay. Montana's Ormond Estate Gisborne Chardonnay is a high quality wine, affordable and produced in volumes of 3,000 to 4,000 cases per year. The winery also produces a good Gewurztraminer. Montana Gisborne wines are exported to the United Kingdom and the United States, and have won gold medals in UK, US and Australian wine competitions.

Corbans is New Zealand's second largest wine producer. It makes two top rated Gisborne Chardonnays. The more prestigious of the two is the scarce Cottage Block Chardonnay. It is not made every vintage, and produced in volumes of only 200 to 1,000 cases when made. In 1995 it was judged champion Chardonnay and champion white wine at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Corbans' second ranked Private Bin Gisborne Chardonnay is readily available, competitively priced and almost as good as the Cottage Block. The 1999 Private Bin Chardonnay was recently awarded a gold medal at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2000.
