TEAM HISTORY 2000-2001
.....(NEW DECADE, NEW ERA, NEW LOOK)...

2000...was definately the year of changes.....The league did, in fact, expand by 2 to 6 teams. The Buckeyes and Gators were added, and the Badgers became the Longhorns.... ...Coaching changes were also abundant...starting with the departure of long time coach Jim Flemming with the Badgers....and ending with Coach Tellep being unable to return because of work schedule conflict, Coach Solomon returned to school, and Coach Guzay took over the reins of the Buckeyes, leading them to an undefeated championship season...and former Badger assistant coach Coach Stan Fleischer became head coach of the Hawkeyes...he was assisted by former Hawkeye, and son, Josh Fleishcer, marking the second year in a row that a former Hawkeye player had become an assistant...Josh was a gutty, tough linebacker and fullback on the 1995 Championship team as was Coach Solomon....Josh is best known for scoring the winning, and only touchdown of that championship game giving the Hawkeyes the title.. ....Coach Fleischer had just finished an unbeated, championship season with the Badgers and was more than willing to return to the team he had watched his son play shine for... .....Other changes were a completely new draft, where teams could only keep 2 players and return the rest into the pool so the expansion teams had equal access to the overal talent.....The Hawkeyes kept solid back and linebacker, Kyle Richards and also an up and coming kid they decided to make a quarterback, Brandon Reese..Other Hawkeyes were re-picked in the later rounds of the draft...Dana Parker, and Alex Davies, to name a couple.... ,,,Other changes also included the 2nd quarter going to 10 mins from the previous 8, and the other quarters going to 8 from 7.... ....Coach Fleischers brought new spark and enthusiasm to the Hawkeyes with a wide open offense, and always tough Hawkeye defense of old, and lead them to an outstanding 6-1 record...Their lone loss coming to the Buckeyes....Unfortunately, the car ran out of gas, and they lost to the always tough in the playoffs Lions in the first round....But, the seed was set, that the Haweyes were back, and once again a team to be reconded with... ....Brandon Reese emerged as one of the best young qbs in the league and a strong leader....and they were also sparked on offense by young, scat back, Larney. Small in size, but quick as the wind, every time he touched the ball there was an excitement... and none more impressive than his 95 yrd TD run through the entire Irish defense on the final play to win the game ...It was the most exciting play seen since Ronnie Greenfield's infamous reverse play in the 1998 playoff game. Ironically, that also came against the Irish... Though the season ended with a disappointment, there was renewed excitement for the future...... ...the Hawkeyes also returned to yellow jerseys....

2001......started with the worst of national tradgedies on Sept 11th...the world came to a halt with sorrow...but, at the urging of President Bush that American life should "return to normalcy", the world, and our season continued on...

with new excitement, and new uniforms, the Hawkeyes came into the season with the highest of hopes, only to get a dose of reality....Despite Brandon Reese proving to be one of the best QBs and athletes in the league, the team struggled overall to a 5-2 record...The loss of Larney, Richards, and Parker took a big bite out of them, and it was a season long effort to regain the spark of last season..... ....But regain it they did...Riding the shoulders of team MVP Reese, they won their last 2 games and roared into the playoffs, demolishing the Irish 23-12 in a game that wasnt nearly as close as the score, and vaulting them into the championship game against the defending champs Buckeyes, and former Hawkeye assistant Coach Guzay, marking the 5th time they have reached the Championship game in their 9 years of existance....

....Lead by former Hawkeye, and the Coach's son, Jimmy Guzay who had developed into the top QB in the league, and one of the best defensive players as well.....The Buckeyes were a tough, veteran team, eager to defend their title and were relentless on offense and defense.....But, the scrappy Hawkeyes werent intimidated, and had fought through all kinds of adversity all year to get there, and werent about to roll over.....Lead by Reese, now facing his best friend and neighbor as well as his fierce rival in Guzay, the young Hawkeyes matched the Buckeyes play by play on both offense and defense, playing the defending champs to a 0-0 tie at the half....But a series of tough luck and bad hops to go along with the strong Buckeye line, finally did them in, and the Buckeyes again prevailed, wearing down the galant Hawkeyes with a 12-0 win......Both Coach Stan and Coach Josh pulled out every trick, and constantly rallied the troops, but just finished short....

...Both Coach Stan and Coach Josh were disappointed, but proud of the way the team had jelled over the season and played hard every play and gave everything they had to the end of every game, especially the championship game. It will be hard to replace the loss of Reese who moves on to the 8th grade division, but the grit and guts this team has developed will remain, and the young Hawkeyes have matured and will once again be a team to be respected........
