New season schedules have now been posted at http://www.wrn.org showing WOR has been reduced to one airing to each target: NAm Sat 1500 UT; Eu, Af, As/Pac all Sat 0900 UT. ** AUSTRIA [and non]. ROI's new 17855 channel to Australasia was good at my location, // to 13730 which was fair; it's in German at 1400 followed by English at 1430 UTC. Listeners in India, Southeast Asia and western Australia will benefit from the timing of this broadcast, but in Japan and eastern AUS and NZ it is on too late for many listeners. Maybe ORF could cut back on 6155 use at midday, leave 13730 as the main daytime frequency, and give listeners in other parts of Asia some timings that would be convenient for them! Checked the Sackville relay at 1530 [sic, now 1600-1700] on 17865 and it is still on in German instead of scheduled English and Spanish. (Joe Hanlon in Philadelphia, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRIA. ORF was last night on 7325 on air already after 0100 (I did not check between 0000-0100); this frequency is registered for 0000-0300 but the schedule on the website shows 0200-0300 only. However, probably this was a transition arrangement, i.e. for the last time full 0000-0300 schedule but already using 7325 instead of 9655. Now after 1200 ORF is as usual on 6155 and 13730 but perhaps those who did not realize the bad situation of ROI yet will be surprised that there was no news on top of the hour but instead an ongoing feature about Bologna... it's "Österreich 1" home service programming because at this time ROI itself is no longer on air. By the way, pictures of the new ROI studios at the Argentinierstraße radiohouse are available now at http://roi.orf.at/intermedia/design/im_fr_foto.html (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRIA [and non]. RAI is still heard from 0000 UT Mon Oct 30 on 7325 in German, with uncancelled Spanish ||13730 at 0030, English at 0230-0257* The Sackville relay on Oct 29 and 30 at 1600-1700 on 17865 was entirely in German contrary to scheduling, but at least including the not yet cancelled Intermedia Sunday at 1630 (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRIA. Normal broadcast from Austria in English on WRN1 for North America was not heard at 12:30pm EST Monday [1730 UT]. German program aired instead. (Mike Cooper, Atlanta, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BELARUS. BR 1 still on usual frequencies 6070, 6115, 7110 (slightly distorted) and 7210. There is also still the usual het on off-frequency Rohrdorf 7265, so evidently also this channel is on air from Belarus as usual. 6070, 7110 and 7265 all registered as Brest but could also orginate from Grodno instead (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BRASIL. 2460, R Alvorada, Río Branco, Oct 19 0915 s/on with ID and into pop music, poor-fair though clear. Only Latin audible on 120mb. (Paul Ormandy, NZ DXpedition via Conexión Digital via DXLD) ** CANADA. As in the RCI schedule DXLD 0-128, the Sunday morning show has stayed at same UT, instead of usual shift; now they are taking the Atlantic zone feed at 1300-1600 UT, as confirmed Oct 29 on 9640, 13655, 17710. Note that the sked does not say these three hours are Sunday only! So we may be getting This Morning three hours weekdays too, at the expense of Quirks and Quarks and several other weekend CBC shows cancelled on RCI (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. While Tapestry is no longer beamed to the Americas, it does go to Asia at 2200 on Sunday via Yamata, Japan. I guess the programmers at RCI figured the spiritually-oriented content of this program was lost on USA listeners. Also, the CBC-1 programs that were previously beamed to Europe have been eliminated. The World at Six, The World This Weekend, As It Happens, Quirks and Quarks, Inside Track, and Madly Off In All Directions are no longer beamed that way. But John Figliozzi will appreciate the fact that Inside Track has been added back into the USA beam at 2330 UTC Sunday. It seems there was a conscious attempt to de-emphasize CBC programs beamed to Europe but to increase the distribution of these programs to Eastern and Southeastern Asia. Do the Canadians still have troops in Kosovo? They seem to be getting short changed. With the West Coast of Canada resembling the Orient in several big cities, it is understandable that Canadian interests would be shifting from Europe to Asia. Possibly we see some evidence of such a shift in the new schedule. (Joe Buch, DE, swprograms Oct 29 via DXLD) ** CANADA. As far as North America is concerned, I tuned in RCI UT Monday around 0220 UT to find the program already in progress. It ended at 0230. So I assume that the Mailbag program begins around 0205. The next DX feature should be on UT November 13 (John Norfolk, OKCOK, swprograms via DXLD) ondemand at http://www.rcinet.ca (gh) ** CROATIA. Hrvatska Radio after 1200 on usual 6165, 9830 and 13830; sounds like the 100 kW unit takes still the 31 metre frequency (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CZECH REPUBLIC. Prague good on 21745 1400 Oct 29, but expected better reception. Could be a result of the less-than-ideal propagation conditions (Ivan Grishin, Ont., DX LISTENING DIGEST) Revived morning English to us ** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Tnx also to David Hodgson, TN, for sending us a tape of his LV de la Alabanza, 4410.2 reception, which was better quality than Mark`s on the web; out-takes 0945-1050 Oct 22. Includes ubiquitous ``Enfoque a la Familia``, which is also on WWCR next to Mundo Radial, another Jesús program with a Pasadena CA address. Unfortunately on this tape I did not hear any Alabanza ID or mention of DR (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY. Issoudun 25820 is no longer lonely on 11 metres with Wertachtal 25740 back, after 1200 noted rather strong and with loud echo (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY. I don't recall ever hearing North Korea this late in the morning; PWBR-2001 does not have it listed for that hour--according to the Blue Pages it wouldn't start until 1600 UTC, and North America is the target for all broadcasts on this channel, though 13760 had been used for Europe in past seasons (Joe Hanlon, PA, Oct 29, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Often notice this QRMing WHRI; and Oct 25 at 1716 there was a het seeming about 13756 or 7 both on car radio and ATS-909; something else? (gh) ** KOREA NORTH. Rumors continue to be passed around about a possible P5 operation to take place at the end of October. However, according to "The Daily DX" a multi-national team of operators who meet in Seoul, South Korea "in preparation for trip and possible demonstration operation of amateur Radio in North Korea", were informed by authorities "that permission to operate Amateur Radio would not be granted." The group was, however, given a new date of January 7, 2001, for a possible Amateur Radio operations. Only a few details are available because of the sensitive nature of this operation. More details are to follow. Let's hope that this operation can take place, KYFC and stay tuned (KB8NW/OPDX October 30/BARF-80 via John Norfolk, OKCOK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** KUWAIT. 17885 Kuwait, R. However, this is not a DXpedition and Masa will only be active during his spare time. Suggested frequencies are: 14260 (+/- 10 kHz) or 21260 (+/- 10 kHz). OPDX received a report this week from a person named Jon stating that he along with some other hams are going to be operating from the "Principality of Sealand" sometime next month or in December. The callsign that they will be using is 1SL1A. Sealand is currently being disputed worldwide as being its own entity. More details on this operation are forthcoming soon. You may have heard of Sealand; if not, here are some links you may find useful for research: http://www.sealandgov.com/ http://www.fruitsofthesea.demon.co.uk/sealand/index.html Here is an ABC News article on Sealand.. HELENA. Escreví uma mensagem ao Tony Leo na semana passada reclamando do meu QSL e ele me respondeu com a mensagem abaixo. (Marcelo Toniolo, Greenvale USA...) Dear DX Listener, We do apologise for the delay in not posting you a QSL Card for our last transmission of the World Wide Broadcast ``Radio St Helena Day October 1999". We had great difficulty in getting the cards printed on St Helena, and as a result the quality will not be as good as those previously sent which we do sincerely apologise. We hope that within the next two month all cards will be posted and you will receive yours together with any other request. Disappointing though the 1999 World Wide Transmission was the final one. Radio St Helena thoroughly enjoyed these World Wide transmission over the past 10 years, and if it wasn't for the age of the transmitters they would still be used on future occasions, unfortunately this is no longer possible and there are no replacements available to do that particular job. Thank you for bearing with us and I hope Radio St Helena can still be regarded as a distant friend. Yours sincerely, Tony Leo, Station Manger, The Voice of the South Atlantic, Radio St Helena, Pouncys Sthl 1zz [sic--??] Tel 290 4669 Tel/fax 290 4542 Radio.sthelena@helanta.sh (via Samuel Cássio Martins, DX CLUBE DO BRASIL, radioescutas via DXLD) ** U S A. WMLK, the shortwave station of the Assemblies of Yahweh, at Bethel, Pennsylvania, is a challenging DX catch with its aging transmitter nominally rated at 50 kilowatts. Hans Johnson of Cumbre DX reports that the station has purchased a 250 kilowatt shortwave transmitter from Swisscom. Hans and I think this is one of the transmitters formerly used for Swiss Radio International -- what else would a 250 kilowatt shortwave transmitter be used for? -- but I have not confirmed this yet. The transmitter has arrived in the United States, but will not be put on the air until March or April of 2001. Among other things, WMLK has to get more electric power delivered to the transmitting site. You can't just plug a 250 kilowatt transmitter into the mains. (Kim Elliott, VOA Communications World Oct 28 via John Norfolk, DXLD) ** U S A. WJFP, 26470 FM, Fort Pierce FL relay, booming in all day Oct 30, from 1400 check past 2200. One ID on the hour gave a list of several FM translators, but did not mention SW on this occasion (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. 1680 KAVT CA, Fresno, this is indeed the correct call for the station, not KADT as I first thought. Heard the ID, same slogan as before at 0600 EST 10/29 (Patrick Martin, Seaside OR, NRC-AM via DXLD) ** U S A. KNRO, 1670 in Redding, CA on this afternoon with ESPN Radio programming and the SF 49ers vs. St. Louis Rams football game. ID's as "ESPN Radio six-hundred, KNRO, Redding". Very good signal. Would like to hear from listeners with station monitoring backgrounds, and in any part of the world, particularly from Japan, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, CIS, etc. Feel free to write about what you are listening to in your reception area; I'll tell you what I'm listening to on the US East Coast... my e-mail address is pwoodswl@cs.com. I have something that some of you may find interesting but it doesn't fall under the description of a normal shortwave broadcast. It is more of a clandestine report. Ever since June I have been monitoring an unusual CW 30m beacon on 10.1064 MHz. I have evidence from another source that it has been on the air since at least December of 1999. It does not identify itself but the message repeats itself after several minutes of silence. The beacon contains ominous messages and has been nicknamed by others as the "Beacon of Hate". I have full details of the beacon and its messages at the following URL: http://www.geocities.com/aa5tb/sig09.html I would be very interested if others can hear this beacon and/or if they have additional details about it. Be sure to read what has been learned so far. It can be difficult to receive due its weak signal and other legitimate CW traffic on and near the frequency. Also, depending on the message it may be on for something like one minute and be off for five minutes. I receive it best here in Texas around sunrise. The CW speed is about 10WPM. As you can read on my Web page, the messages are structured much like the Riddler's riddles on "Batman". I don't know if the operator has any real intent or is just someone playing around. I find it difficult to understand why anyone would dedicate a transmitter for such a purpose for any length of time. I once thought it might be messages to agents in the field much like the classical "number stations" but such an encryption to plain text I would think would be too easy to decrypt. Who knows? The transmissions are 24 hours a day as far as I can tell but propagation seems to limit reception here in north Texas to the hours of darkness. Best signal has been around my local sunrise although I have had a pretty good signal tonight at 0200 UTC. 73, (Steve Yates - AA5TB Fort Worth, TX - EM12gs http://www.geocities.com/aa5tb aa5tb@arrl.net Oct 29 via swl@qth.net via DXLD) ###
