Dear Wolfgang: 1) RAE have NOT changed any UTC times of transmissions beamed to Europe or to any other site; all continue as usual without changes. 2) The confusion appeared because inside the country, was planned a change in the past weeks in the local time, but, because Argentina has a great territory, the planned changes would have benefited some provinces and injured others. Because of this, the final decision was not to change the current local time. 3) Because of this, RAE announced the changes, when the project was a real option. Finally, not having success, all continues normally now. I hope this explanation helps clarify the situation. 4) On this week only (Tue 3 - Fri 6), as test, RAE will broadcast only the GERMAN language on 15345 in // to 11710. (Usually only on 15345) 73's, (Gabriel Iván Barrera, Argentina, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ASIA [non]. Here is how BBCM handles the touchy subject of RFA transmitter sites, prefacing a July 4 schedule which does not specify sites on each frequency and will not be reproduced here, other versions having recently appeared in DXLD: (gh) Radio Free Asia is a US government-funded service aimed at Burma, Cambodia, China, North Korea, Laos, Tibet and Vietnam. It is overseen by the Broadcasting Board of Governors - a US government agency. It began broadcasting on 30 September 1996. RFA uses International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) transmitters in Holzkirchen (Germany), Iranawila (Sri Lanka) and Saipan/Tinian (Mariana Islands); and relays elsewhere which may include Almaty (Kazakstan), Dushanbe (Tajikistan), Hawaii (KWHR), Palau, Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) and Yerevan (Armenia). UT Friday July 6 at 2305: Lingua Franca - "Degrees of Separation -- On Being Spanished, Deutsched, Japanesed, Greeked and Malayed". Poet and novelist Peter Goldsworthy, whose works have been translated into all the above, considers what is gained rather than lost in translation, which he likens to some kind of rinse-cycle. The true test is back-translation into English. The greater the degree of separation between the original language and the language of translation the more dislocated the back-translation. But underlying Babel perhaps a deeper common language exists - surfacing in the various Sign Languages. Do you know if they still plan to give the rubber chicken QSL to every 25th listener? My late mother, who was Canadian, never took much interest in shortwave listening, but when she heard about this famous Canadian pirate station, she rooted for me to get one of those rubber chickens! I never got one, but I am the first woman who ever reported to CSIC and got a QSL from them. Glenn, thought you might find this interesting...have a bang up 4th. 73 from Bill Smith, W5USM Playing Shortwave Radio Since 1950 --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Richard Loken To: Old Tube Radios Subject: Re: A new voice on the former BBC frequencies--HOORAY! Date: Tue, 03 Jul 2001 11:40:45 -0600 (MDT) It is interesting that internet streaming audio is extolled by so many people and organizations that otherwise seem reasonably close to sentient. My employer has a T1 line to the internet which I have helped to maintain for 20 years and for a few years ending in 1999 we served streaming audio for CKUA radio. CKUA is a public FM broadcaster (formerly owned by the Alberta government but thrown out to starve circa 1994) who get a significant part of their operating budget by twice yearly on air appeals in the spirit of PBS. CKUA has a significant world wide internet audience who presumably send them donations to justify their web site and audio server. I heard a letter read during one of their fund raisers which came from a listener in South America who listened to them via real audio at 56K over a long distance telephone call to some ISP in some South American city, the listener and the announcer both thought this was just wonderful. You have got to be kidding! We found that the CKUA streaming audio would easily eat up 100% of our outgoing T1 if we let it and that was under a dozen streaming audio connections. We also found that we would lose 100% of incoming bandwidth if 12 employees took it upon themselves to listen to some streaming audio source. It does not take a math major to question the economics of internet streaming audio as a replacement for a radio! Our employees are using a $2000.00 computer and $100,000.00 or more of infrastructure to listen to National Public Radio when a $20.00 radio would get them similar programming from the local CKUA FM repeater? Some overpaid first world bozo is sitting in the Amazon jungle listing to CKUA over a phone line at $.09 or more a minute on a computer instead of on a Sony 2010 for $400.00 or less? Are we going to have impoverished third world villages spending what money they have on computers and ADSL connections instead of wells, sewer lines, and agricultural tools so they can hear the news on NHK? I must sympathize with Ebenezer Scrooge and retire to Bedlam because the world is beyond my comprehension. --- Richard Loken VE6BSV, Systems Programmer - VMS Athabasca University Athabasca, Alberta, Canada ** richardlo@admin.athabascau.ca ** (via Bill Smith, TX, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHILE. Hi Glenn, I read on the RN website http://www.medianetwork.nl that RN will begin regular programs on all NAm frequencies on July 4. When there are no English programs being produced, RN will air repeats of recent features and programs. Regards, (Ricky Leong, QC, July 3, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Yes, underway on 5965 around 1125 check July 4, weak and QRMd. Unfortunately, by monkey-see-monkey-do frequency management, RN subjects itself to BBC`s mistakes. If RN were ultimately to expand its own SW to NAm, it ought to rethink and retime, not just copy BBC (gh, DXLD) On Thursday, Radio Netherlands announced that beginning Sunday, "it will broadcast to North America on all the frequencies being relinquished on same day by the BBC World Service." The Dutch international broadcaster will do this for at least two weeks, perhaps a month, but probably {no} longer than that because of the expense of leasing all those transmitters (Kim Elliott, VOA Communications World June 30 via DXLD) When to expect original RN programs on Jul 4 (1. Glenn--- Re: Rubin`s item under the stuff about the BBC cut-off, I`ve subscribed to Ricochet`s 28.8 wireless service for about four years, and it provides fairly good audio streaming, giventaking into account the usual back-ups that occur on the Internet. The audio quality through a tinny laptop speaker is about what you`d expect. Sadly, Metricom filed for Chapter 11 this morning, and although it vows to keep the service up, how long it will last is anyone`s guess (Chuck Albertson, Seattle, Wash., July 2, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K [non]. THANK YOU FROM RADIO EZRA. Dear Sirs, Please could you pass on my thanks to your various members for any reception reports they may have sent to my station over the last three months. It has been a great help to me and also very interesting to learn about my various listeners. A total of 76 reports were received from 19 countries, several far outside of the intended target zone. I have personally responded to every report with a QSL card. As far as I can tell Radio Ezra is the smallest international broadcaster in the world. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on air despite a number of technical problems and hope to be back again later in the year, perhaps to a different target zone. Personally funded by me, Radio Ezra has hopefully been an inspiration to any budding broadcasters with only a tiny budget to hand. Short wave remains the only real cost effective way of reaching a global audience and you certainly don`t need to be wealthy to get your message out. I have put a statistics page on the Radio Ezra homepage which gives a breakdown of the reception reports and some other station info as well. Best wishes and God's blessing, John D. Certain conditions can result in global coverage. The frequency used for the last test broadcasts was 13850 kHz. They were heard each Sunday from 25th March until 24th June 2001 between 11:00 and 11:15 UT (from Ezra homepage via DXLD) Hi Frans, could you confirm once and for all whether Ezra was really from Wavre, as Mr Hill is still claiming? There have been a number of clues to the contrary, notably the poor technical quality (gh) Hi Glenn, The Ezra claim (on the internet) to have broadcast from Waver is nonsense. VRT engineers have been looking into the matter but failed to find from where they have been transmitting. One thing is sure: it was NOT from Waver. Sorry not to be of more help (Frans VOSSEN, Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal, July 4, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U K [non]. I heard today July 2nd at 0430 the Radio Netherlands transmission on 6175 around 0435-0500 now that the BBC has closed their service to North America. It would be interesting if a few broadcasters who know better than the BBC could take turns to sit on the old BBC frequencies and perhaps conduct some simple competitions requiring listener feedback. In that way, some information could be accumulated to show that shortwave still does live!
