My Geology Page

Below are some pictures of the various places I have been during my undergraduate and graduate studies at Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma. I have a nice collection of minerals and fossil specimins that I will be posting as soon as I get pictures scanned. In the meantime, enjoy the ones below.

Above is a cave located near Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Notice the colors of the formations. It is basically a freshwater limestone which does not fair well if touched. The oil from skin seems to 'kill' the rock, so if you go in to these caves do not touch. This cave is a good example of what Carlsbad Caverns looks like. Carlsbad is well worth the trip.

Large stalagmite in the cave pictured above. The amazing part about the cave is it is totally dark until the flash of the camera lights up the features.
Same pic as above but with Nick and I for scale. The formations in the cave are amazing.

This is the crew I went to field camp with back in the summer of 1990 near Canyon City, Colorado. I am on the left followed by George, Salem, Nick, Chris and Dave. We had been doing some field work when a large thunderstorm opened up and almost drowned us.

This is the surface expression of the Spiro Sandstone is southeastern Oklahoma. It is a great natural gas reservoir in the subsurface - approximately 13,000 feet below the surface at this point. Notice the steep angle (dip) of the bed to the horizon. There were some huge thrust faults in this area which accounts for the 'mountains' as some call them. The pine growing out of the sandstone is a good point of reference.

I have not spent all my time in caves or climbing on rocks, below is a familiar scene which I visited while working as a production geologist with Exxon in New Orleans.
