What: The Haskell Fencing Club / Tai-chi Chuan for Mind, Body and Spirit
Where: The Armory Military Museum, Inc.
When: Every Sunday at 2p (Tai-chi Chuan) / Every Sunday at 4:00p (Fencing)
Info: Both groups are progressive, starting with basics and advancing at a pace tailored for each group. Each group is limited to 20 members, while new groups require at least 10 members to form. New groups form as minimum members are assembled, so bring your friends. No prior exposure or training is required, and members do not have to purchase special equipment. Groups are a donation of only $15 per week (per member), or $50 for the month (per member), with no contracts or minimum sign-up requirements.
The Haskell Fencing Club focuses on safety and control while learning to effectively brandish a rapier in non-tournement style combative fencing. Lessons are derived from a blend of Italian technique and Spanish tactics. Immediate physical benefits are noticed while sharpening the mind. Groups are conducted in English, with some special terms in Italian and/or Spanish. Recommended footwear: tennis shoes/sneakers or any rubber-soled shoe/boot.
Tai-chi Chuan for Mind, Body and Spirit is non-combative, focusing on balance and fluidity of movement for muscle training and joint therapy, and is influenced mainly by the traditions of the Buddhist monks of China, known as "Shaolin".
Movements and postures are derived from traditional Shaolin "dances", and may be performed at varying speeds to music.
Meditation or "quiet time" is also an integral part of relaxation and wellness. In this section, members explore the founding principles of the Asian culture, and develop a higher, stronger relationship with their spiritual self through contemplation of ancient eastern philosophies, while learning to apply these principles to modern, everyday situations for total serenity.
