Betty’s Original Poems

Name of Love

From the heart's desiring,
A commitment of two souls,
Words of labeling are just a mouthing,
Communication is the essence,
To the kindling of firing.

Extreme right does not let me,
A heated battle of heads,
Can not, will not see,
Taxes call me single,
But the heart is stronger.

Winds of change must come,
Free-spirited and patience,
Call me what you may,
Words are fleeting,
But our love will last longer.

Behind the Colors

What lies behind the colors,
Eyes of blue, brown, green, gray, and hazel,
A steady stream of speech,
Lifetimes, cultures, languages,
Religious and political beliefs,
Beautiful paintings, buildings and
The masterful literary legacies.

Reaching and transcending space and time,
Entering hearts and minds,
Evaluating and being awe-struck,
Challenging misconceptions and ideologies,
Weapons of knowledge,
Arm the minds of the masses.

What is really going on behind the colors?
Black, white, or a shade of gray?
A glint in the eye,
Or a slight smile curled on the lips,
Reveal the human race.

Ordinary People

Each sharing "over the rainbow",
Rising each day with a cup of joe,
Saying, "have a great day.
I'll see you this evening."

Events transpire in each's lives,
Steady tick tock of sunshine,
Thoughts with the one I love,
"How's my sweetheart's day going?"

No excuses, challenges of perception,
One footstep at time like everyone else,
Not strange, eccentric, or odd.

Paying the mortgage, utilities,
Keeping a household running,
We're just ordinary people,
More alike than different.

Holding onto the present,
Hoping for the future,
Planning for retirement,
We're just two individuals,
Surviving the ordinary.
