Arriving in San Francisco in 1982 with $30.00 in her pocket, she bartered her art
for rent and ate ketchup sandwiches. In 1983, the
San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner published her cartoon, "SARK's San Francisco"
which ran for six years. In 1989 she invented Spirit Cards-tiny,
hand-torn pieces of paper with hand-painted edges and
one word in the center ("Yes," "Nap," "Open," "Relax").
In 1991 Celestial Arts published her first book, A Creative Companion
which led to Inspiration Sandwhich her enormously successful follow up.
This was followed by SARK's Journal and Play!Book,
Living Juicy and the Magic Cottage Address Book. In 1997 Simon & Schuster
published her phenomenal bestseller Succulent Wild Woman: Dancing with your Wonderful Self.
SARK was so inspired by people's reactions to the book
that in 1998 she wrote The Bodacious Book of Succulence
the bestselling companion book to Succulent Wild Woman.
In 1993 Camp SARK was created.
It is now a thriving business that oversees all aspects of SARK's
publishing and licensing endeavors. It is owned by SARK and run
by her two business partners Adrienne Steele and Brigette Scheel.
Camp SARK has also established the SARK Foundation,
a new program designed to bring comprehensive art programs back into schools,
as well as support libraries, women and child welfare and environmental concerns.
SARK lives in the Magic Cottage in San Francisco with her cat Jupiter.
