Reviews for Final Fantasy 3/6

JEFF's Review

Final Fantasy 3 showed that Square was not just your average Joe Shmo game company. It provided countless hours of gameplay for me and I could not believe how such a deep and enjoyable RPG could come from the SNES! It was amazing how the music was incredibly enjoyable too! All this on the system that had never been introduced to Mode 7 backgrounds and 14 playable characters! How impressive is that?

You probably already know the story by now, because this game has been out for some time and has also been released on the Playstation as Final Fantasy Anthology (with FF5). But I'll give you a sketchy outline of the story. It starts out with a girl as the main character, Terra. She turns into an imperial knight once she wears the Slave Crown, but the main story truly begins when Locke, a thief, removes the crown. Terra now has to solve why the Empire would want to control her, and not anybody else. She also finds out where she truly came from, who her parents were, and how she made it into this world.

Along her journey she meets up with many allies that help her defeat the Empire once and for all. There is: Edgar, King of Figaro; Sabin, brother of the King and user of the Blitz skill; Shadow, a mysterious ninja; Celes, a former Imperial General and user of Magic; Cyan, a loyal swordsman; Gau, a young native of the Veldt; Setzer, a gambler and pilot of the Airship; Mog, a moogle and master of dancing; Strago, user of Magic and grandfather of Relm; Relm, a painter; Gogo, a strange gypsy; and Umaro, an abominable snowman. The last two characters mentioned, Gogo and Umaro, are secret characters, as well as Mog.

Now I have to talk about the graphics. The Mode 7 overworld is outstanding for a Super Nintendo game, but the simple design of the characters and the flat overworld was a slight turn-off. Now I know that the SNES can't handle good 3-D graphics, but the game wasn't quite that appealing to the eye. However, as all RPGers should know, graphics are not everything in an RPG!!! So don't let the graphics stop you from getting this game!

Now, the music and sound effects are absolutely FLAWLESS! The track "Forever Rachel" that is played when Locke's girlfriend has an unfortunate fate, is perfect! I've never seen anything that sets the mood up so perfectly! This is a great game because you really care about the characters and the development of them is excellent, and the music can contribute to this a heck of a lot of it sets the mood right.

The gameplay is long and drawn out when you want it to be, and fast and upbeat when you want to move things along. Perhaps you don't want to destroy Kefka right now, just stop by Jidoor and bid at the auction. Or maybe it's been a rough day for fighting the Empire? Visit South Figaro and be welcomed with open arms from the warm-hearted people! The gameplay is great especially since you can go ultra-fast when flying the airship so you can speed things along. Oh yeah, did I mention the story never gets boring and you will always be craving more even after you beat it?

The only downside with the control is the you can't move your character diagonally which is almost a necessity for RPGs these days. But that never gets frustrating and you will be more concerned with the characters than anything else.

Now judging from my review so far, how long do you think this game will last? A VERY LONG TIME. I'd like to see one person that is tired of this game. I suggest you get Final Fantasy Anthology for the Playstation because the lasting appeal is better because I believe that once you beat the game, you open up CG movies that are scenes from the game converted to FMV! Please buy this game any way you can, there is not much more to say except that this is the best Final Fantasy game ever, and if you are a true RPGer, it should already be in your game library. Now I'm gonna go play this game.
