JOB HAZARD ANALYSIS (JHA)

Each duty within your facility requires a written procedure that is based on your company's policies and standards, as well as adhering to any safety legislation that applies to the work. Job Hazard Analysis (also known as Job Safety Analysis, JSA's), not only aid in preventing the sudden injuries and incidents that occur in the workplace, they also address the many ergonomic concerns that may lead to long term illness and injury. By carefully studying each duty within your plant, we can deternine methods of reducing both long and short term injuries, as well as write specific procedures which allows for easier cross training, as well as introducing the possibility increased production and higher quality expectations. This consulting program works miracles when it comes to standardization of duties and procedures, and makes it much easier to track performance as well.

The duration and rates for this program depend on the size and number of employees at your facility.

INCREASING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEES

Many Health and Safety Committees run into problems when it comes to the ability to get things done. More often than not, this is due to a misunderstanding of the duties, functions and powers of the committee itself, and it's individual members. This program begins with a basic safety inspection of your facility, as well as analyzing past minutes from the committee meetings. From here, we can put a program in place that will recognize and control safety issues, while at the same time, reducing costs and time. We can aid your company in re-organizing and retraining your health and safety committee in order that they may carry out their duties in a more efficient manner which will also heighten the safety awareness of everyone in your facility. In addition, we will develop a written safety audit procedure and specific checklists that will ensure that nothing slips through the cracks.

The duration and cost of this program depend on the size of your company and the number of committee members.

MACHINE GUARDING

One of the main causes of serious injuries and deaths in the workplace is equipment that is not guarded properly. This happens because many companies are utiziling older equipment that was not engineered to today's safety standards, not maintaining equipment properly, or by using guards that are either insufficient, or can be easily bypassed or removed. This program involves inspecting each piece of equipment at your facility, and heighlighting all of the danger areas such as pinch points, hazardous surfaces, and areas where objects may fly out of the equipment. From here, we will generate a confidential written report that lists all of our observations, as well as recommending possibilities for upgrades that will meet current compliance standards. This program does not include the actual engineering of new guards, however, we will provide valuable information that will aid tremendously in this area.

The cost and duration of this program depend on the size of your facility, and the number and types of equipment in operation.

LOCKOUT/TAGOUT CONSULTING

Many life threatening injuries and deaths are caused by equipment that is accidentally restarted while a worker is performing maintenance, repair, clearing jams or simply cleaning the equipment. The most important thing to realize is that none of these accidents need to happen. Today's lockout laws are quite specific with respect to when and where lockouts are to be performed. Another common cause of these incidents is that many people do not understand what it takes to bring a machine to a zero energy state. Simply shutting off a machine is not good enough, and in many cases, just relying on the main disconnect is also not enough. Our lockout/tagout consulting program includes inspection of each piece of machinery at your facility, tracing all of the potential hazards, and ensuring that there are adequate lockout procedures in place. This inspection includes identification of all electrical lockout points, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, Pressure buildup, and areas where gravity may be a factor (where blocking is required). We will look at your company's current lockout procedures and ensure that all compliance issues are met, including the lockout system that is used at your facility.

The duration and cost of this program depends on the size of your company, the number and types of equipment at your plant, and the complexity of the lockout style for each piece of equipment or machinery.

EFFECTIVE WAREHOUSE CONTROL

Is your warehouse as productive and effective as it should be? Is it safe? This progam includes an on site inspection of your warehouse and identifying any problem areas that may exist. We will analyze your tracking and flow procedures from the point at which the stock arrives until it is shipped out, concentrating on accuracy, paperwork, tracing and tracking of items, labeling, safe handling and storage. We also concentrate on effective methods of maximizing space and reducing loss due to damage, mishandling, and improper flow techniques.

The cost and duration of this program depends on the size and activity of your warehouse, and the number of people involved.

CONFINED SPACE ENTRY CONSULTING PROGRAM

This program is designed to identify all confined spaces within your facility and develop an effective permit system that meets all legal requirements. The hazards of each space will be identified with respect to atmoshperic hazards, physical characteristics, lockout points and ventilation requirements. From here, we will analyze the requirements for entry into each of the spaces, since these requirements may differ from space to space. We then can determine which is the best route to take with respect to entry equipment, permit styles, personal protective equipment and rescue equipment. Special attention is paid to areas where chemicals are used, as well as the requirements for entrants, attendants, supervisory personnel, and emergency response teams.

The cost and duration of this program depends on the number and types of confined spaces at your facility, as well as the number of people on your confined space entry and rescue teams.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCEDURES/ACTION PLANS

If there was an emergency that occured at your plant, how would it be handled? Would everyone know how to respond? In most cases, procedures are in place, but either the workers are completely unaware of the procedures, or the procedures themselves may be inadequate to handle all hazards. For instance, the procedures for handling a workplace injury are different from the procedures used to handle a fire, chemical exposure, or leak of a flammable product. Safety 1st will indentiy all of the potential hazards at your facility that may involve emergency response, and develop effective procedures that are clear, concise, and easy to follow.

This program is site specific, and may be developed plant wide, or subdivided for each specific area at your facility. The cost and duration of this program depends on the size of your plant, and the number and types of hazards that must be addressed.

ACCIDENT/INCIDENT INVESTIGATION

In addition to providing training on accident and incident investigations, your company can utilize the services of Safety 1st to perform the actual investigation itself. Our investigations are confidential and thorough, and are designed to stick to the facts, while remaining completely unbiased. The purpose of the investigation is to determine all of the causes that led up to the incident and to develop methods of ensuring that the same or similar accidents will not occur in the future. Due to the sensitive nature of accident investigation, it is important to realize that the investigation is based on the circumstances and events that caused the accident, and will not be used to place blame. After the investigation has been completed, we will develop an in depth written report detailing the investigation itself, identificaton of all causes, and recommendations for improvements and safeguards. The advantages of using our services in this situation are that we are not too close to any of the people involved, witnesses tend to speak more freely to an outside source, and we are not complacent with the safety hazards of your workplace. Once again, all finding will be held in strict confidence.

The cost and duration of this service depends on the severity of the accident, and the number of people involved.
