Butane Handling and Storage

Butane Handling and Storage

BUTANE HANDLING AND STORAGE

Butane can be a very dangerous substance if it is not handled properly. Butane can be very explosive, it can displace oxygen in seconds, and it can cause severe frostbite burns when it comes in contact with exposed skin.

Ontario Regulations under the Energy Act require that anyone who handles butane or

butane fueled equipment must be the holder of a certificate or be in possession of an

accepted Record of Training (ROT).

The following is a listing of the topics that are covered during this program:

Characteristics of Butane

	* What is Butane * Properties of butane

	* Toxicity				* Odour

	* Density				* Flammability Range

	* Expansion ratio * Temperatures and pressures

	* Solvency of hydrocarbons * Personal Protective Equipment

	* First Aid Measures * Frostbite

	* Sources of Ignition * Performing Leak Tests

Butane Cylinders

	* Liquid Butane Systems * Vapour Butane Systems

	* Fixed Tube Liquid Level Gauge * Pressure Relief Valve

	* Liquid Service Valve * Fill Valve

	* Float or Fuel Gauge * Cylinder Collar

	* Base or Foot Ring * Inspecting a Cylinder

Cylinder Storage, Handling and Changing

	* Procedures for changing a cylinder	* Handling Butane Cylinders

	* Storing butane - requirements * Receiving Policy

	* Transporting butane * Adherence to procedures

Emergency Response

	* Carbon Monoxide Poisoning * Responding to a fire

	* Responding to Butane Leaks * Evacuations

A sample of a Material Safety Data Sheet (M.S.D.S.) is also included, and is used as a

summary to the butane training program. This program meets or exceeds the training

requirements under the Energy Act, and is accredited by the Technical Standards and

Safety Authority
