Personal Experience
- Stockwell B. Day was the Provincial Treasurer and Acting Premier of the Government of Alberta prior to becoming Leader of the Canadian Alliance. His personal knowledge and experience in life have expanded thanks to living in other regions of Canada such as Quebec, Ontario, the Maritimes, the Northwest Territories, the Arctic, British Columbia and Alberta. The wealth of information gain has allowed him to understand the problems about and solutions for the nation much better than most leaders today. Stockwell Day is identified as one of Canada's leading voices in advocating for democratic reform, long-term economic opportunity for all Canadians and constitutional respect for federal-provincial relations as a unifying force in our nation.
Stockwell Day was born in Barrie, Ontario, raised in the Maritimes, went to high school in Ottawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec then attended the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia and Northwest Bible College in Edmonton, Alberta, received training in auctioneering and funeral, boating, logging, oil exploration business in British Columbia and Alberta and also took counselling and ministerial training in Alberta.
Stockwell has a strong background in business, community service and government. In business, he has been active in Day's Auction Sales and as a contractor supplying commercial interiors as well as work in the funeral, boating, logging, oil exploration industries.
He has also worked in a leadership role with young people as a counsellor and administrator at an independent school. His community work includes serving as Administrator and Assistant Pastor at the Bentley Christian School from 1978 to 1985, working on Teen Challenge Ministries, and serving as an education consultant. Stockwell Day has been involved in a number of community activities including fund-raising for local boards and associations and serving as a member of the Red Deer Rotary Club and the Red Deer Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Mr. Day was first elected to serve as the Member of the Legislative assembly for Red Deer-North, one of Canada's fastest growing cities, in May 1986. He was re-elected in subsequent elections in March 1989, June 1993 and March 1997. During that time in the Alberta Legislature, he served the governing Progressive Conservatives in a variety of senior roles including Chief Whip, Government House Leader, Minister of Labour and Minister of Social Services. Later, Mr. Day was appointed Provincial Treasurer as Minister of Finance on March 26, 1997. Working with Premier Ralph Klein and others, he has an impressive record of achievement in common-sense reforms to government, including:
Reforming the Workers Compensation Board by moving it out of government and eliminating its $600 million unfunded liability, while increasing worker benefits and cutting employer premiums.
Reducing the Labour Ministry's budget by 40% and privatizing many of its operations.
Continuing the implementation of Alberta's dramatic welfare reforms, which moved tens of thousands of able-bodied welfare recipients into the job market.
Implementation of the Debt Elimination Act and introduction of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, making the Alberta Government the first in Canada to eliminate its net debt, and resulting in an increase in Alberta's credit rating.
Introduction of Canada's only Single Rate Tax, which cut taxes for every Albertan, removed low-income earners from the tax rolls altogether, equalized tax treatment for single-income families, and ended bracket creep.
On July 8, 2000, Stockwell Day made political history by being elected as the first Leader of the Canadian Alliance. In September 2000, he won over 70% of the vote in a by-election held in the federal constituency of Okanagan-Coquihalla. Mr. Day was officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament on September 19th, 2000, becoming Leader of her Majesty's Loyal Opposition in the House of Commons. In the 2000 national election campaign, Mr. Day's team increased the Canadian Alliance's results in every region of the country. The Canadian Alliance increased its seat count to 66 members from 58, saw its popular vote rise by over 750,000 votes, elected two new MPs in Ontario and placed second in over 80 ridings in Ontario. The Alliance also increased its vote in Quebec from 10,000 three years ago to 250,000 in 2000. Stockwell Day has shown he can win and win big, has shown he has the experience, he has the talent and has the political strength to stick to the guns of the Reform-Alliance policy and shoot down any Liberal attempt to attack our party again. Take Stock in the future of the Reform-Alliance and vote Day as our next Leader and next Prime Minister of the Dominion of Canada.
