Every Sunday morning on British BBC radio, the bells of St. Peters church in Evercreech, Somerset, peel out, heralding yet another Sabbath day.
This claim to national fame is perhaps the only thing that the East Somerset village can boast about, yet virtually unrecognised, is the parish's contribution to record keeping. The Evercreech parish registers were commenced in 1540 and therefore rank as the second oldest set in Somerset.
In 1538, Henry Vlllth commanded the church to record the major three events of a person's life - his christenings, marriage and burial. Family historians can thank the royalist obedience of the Evercreech parish minister of that time, for commencing his registers shortly after the injunction was issued. When other rulers re-iterated the injunction in 1547 and 1588, Evercreech already had a fine record of local events.
During the civil war 4Evercreech was a royalist stronghold, since the nobleman of the village, Sir Robert Hopwood was a principal commander in the King's Army.
The registers themselves make no reference to the civil war and continue uninterrupted during that period. From 1653 to 1660, the records nationally were kept by a registrar or preacher appointed by the Government. James Dugdale, the vicar during this time managed to keep the records safe, but a change in the information recorded in the registers from 1653 until 1660 does suggest that someone else had control of the input since for the first time, birthdates were included with baptisms.
Probably due to the need for soldiers in the civil war,the number of marriages in the 1640s averaged only two a year. The Great Plague of 1665/6 seemed to cause little effect in the village since burials remained virtually constant in number, averaging about fifteen a year.
The major problem connected with the registers is the unfortunate jump in the registers of about 15yrs, and the subsequent loss of about 250 unrecorded christenings, between 1675 and 1690. When a new vicar was appointed in 1690 the entries were once again maintained giving descendants of the villagers a set of parish registers covering a time period of four hundred and forty three years, virtually unbroken from today back to 1540.
When Marian Lane was buried on the 30th July, 1540, she had the dubious honour of being the first registered person in the parish registers of Evercreech.
Nothing else is known about Marain, her age, parentage, or even if she was only a Lane by marriage. Notwithstanding, her' entry was the first for many generations for the Lane family. In fact, many of the families in Evercreech whose roots commenced in those early days can relate to the Lanes.
My own ancestor, Ralph Lane, the son of Ralph Lane, was baptised in 1545. The eldest child of Ralph Hobbes, however, had the honour of being the first child recorded as being christened in the parish. Henry Poynten's daughter was baptised on the l0th of September and a marriage performed on the 27th September. These early, partly obliterated entries introduce the future generations of Evercreech people. Of their families only the Lanes and the Poyntens continue in the registers for any length of time.
The first complete entries in the registers start with the baptism of Richard Clipson in December 1540, followed by other famous early names of Evercreech -Furher, Pippert, Frye, Penny, Haise and Brodderibe. Each name appears regularly for the next few~hundred years, but some of these disappeared completely from the registers, either through moving, or dying.
The registers include entries for several 'old maids' The one often quoted is for Jone Britten , ' a maiden as she , affirmed of the age of 100 years.' Since she was buried in 1588 she could have been one of the earliest residents mentioned. Her surname does not appear very often in the registers however.
'Galfridus Underwood nuptus fuit Ellinora Piper filia Ricardi Piper pochia de Everchrich quart die May Ano Piede.'
The entries in the register appear chronologically, regardless of the type of ordinance performed. Later, the records were divided annually into their respective categories. As the different Acts were passed governing the keeping of parish registers, separate books for each ordinance were kept.
The actual content of the registers is of great interest. Naturally, the quality of the recorded information is only as good as the clerk or vicar who made the notes. Until 1630 christening entries recorded only the father's name, yet some of the marriages as with Jeffrey Underwoods, above, give details of the bride's father.
From 1760 onwards, birth dates were occasionally entered with the baptism date, and ages were included in the burials, whereas previously only a parish or occupation ,or relationship was given. Unfortunately, not many vicars recorded all of this in the one entry.
Nevertheless, the records improve from the 1760s onwards, in terms of genealogical value. In 1812, with another change of law, a separate register for christenings was ordered. The benefit being the additional information required of the father's abode and occupation.
Reverend John West's appointment improved the quality of the record keeping considerably. He made a point of cross-referencing burial entries with marriage and christening dates, and invariably added the names of the parents of young married women who died, giving us a clue of their maiden names.
He also added other interesting titbits:
'George the son of George & Ann Dupe, christened 31 May 1828, (he was one of twin brothers, the other died about 5 minutes after birth).
"Charles, son of William & Ann Reakes, a day labourer with a wooden leg.
”
Of great genealogical benefit was his inclusion of the new child's position in the family, whether firstborn, seventh son, or fourth child.
Often he added other details: 'John Hinks the son of John and Charlotte Hinks , publicly received into the church at the time of his father's funeral. Privately baptised. John Hinks and his wife were at the time at his wife's father's home, Edward March's ,Bagbury,.. John Hinks was a labourerer and pensioner of Doulting. The father of the baby) died at Bagbury , February, 20 and buried February 1831.
Reverend West's retirement was a sad loss to the genealogist. Succeeding vicars recorded only the necessary details. The beautiful hand writing, and meticulous entries were past. Unfortunately, the golden era of record keeping was over.
NOTABLE FAMILIES OF EVERCREECH
Casbert Rossitter fathered twenty children from three marriages, and thus becomes the greatest contributor of Evercreech villagers.
Several families had ten or more children. William Steeds and his wife Ann produced the most children in a single marriage, having had fifteen.
A note in the parish books stated that the Mullins family were the largest in 1811. But it was the Reakes family who could be credited with the most family groups than any other. A total of over a hundred separate family units lived in Evercreech at some time since the the arrival of William & Mary Reakes into the parish about 1660.
But other than their numbers, the Reakes family were not socially prominent citizens, their occupations being mainly thatchers, butchers and farmers.
Intermarriage with many of the other vil1agers means that most Evercreech family trees have some connection with the Reakes line.
A few notably rich and socially prominent families resided in Evercreech. Lord James Talbot, Peer of Ireland and his wife the Dowager Ann Lady Talbot had four daughters, whose weddings would have been the social events of the year, judging by the many signatures on their wedding entries.
Earlier prominent families were the Rodbards, Dugdales, Hopwoods, Hayes & Cozens. Memorials to these early Evercreech citizens are hung in the church. But regardless of class, private pews, and private baptisms, all of the villagers appear recorded alongside each other
NAMES
The longest name recorded belongs to 2yr-old Emma Maud Amelia Paul Adele Ursula Lily Gertrude Bucknole, who was buried in 1879. Normally, children were christened with only one name until the 1800s when it became fashionable, nationally, to endow offspring with two Christian names, or occasionally a Christian name followed by a mother's maiden name as in the case of John Reakes Carter the son of William Carter and Mary Reakes.
The most popular Christian names were William, Elizabeth, John and Ann, although Raffe (or Ralph) was an early popular name that disappeared from general use about the 1600s. Agnes, Joan, and Alice were favourite early girl’s names, which also dropped out of fashion. Many families passed pet names down. The Thomas family repeatedly used Richard, (H)Anna, Nicholas and Grace, while the names George and Sarah were passed down for at least five generations in my own Reakes line.
Ancrett, Casbert, Flower, Tabitha, Temperance, Giles, Melliar, Albyn, Cornelius, Theophillia, Seward, Colston, Virgin and Champion are some of the more unusual names appearing in the registers. Although, Biblical, Royal and names of general accepted use such as Harriet Catherine, Walter and Frances were more than often chosen.
It was not uncommon to repeat a name 'in' a family ,when the child bearing it died. Jeffrey Underwood desperately wanted a son called William. He ended up with six sons called William - all of whom died as infants.
Abel Jessop (1715) was the fourth Abel Jessop to have been born in the village, and desired a son to continue the tradition. He eventually had three sons, all called Abel, since the first two died as infants.
Accents, pronounciation and the lack of uniformed spelling caused surnames to vary throughout the years. The name Poynten (1540) goes to Poyntween (1622) Poyntwine (1662) to Poyntin (1757) and Pointin (1801) to the eventual Pointing in 1819.
The Dukes/Jukes/Dupe/Dupes and Jupes Family had their name entered in any and all of the pre-mentioned forms. The seven sons of the Pitter family were christened as Pitter but married as Spitter.
Evidences of people still existing in the area without surnames are found in the early registers:
' 1544 - was baptised Alice of Barrowe ,daughter of John of Barrowe.
1548 - was buried Thomas of Barowe (sic.)
1548 - was married Henry Peny(sic) to Jone of Barrowe.
Occasionally - but chiefly in the early registers, -a family changed names. John Lane was known as Lane alias Mathews. In 1672 he and his wife Susannah had a son James Lane, who was christened and buried. The following year another son James was born and christened as James the son of John & Susannah Mathews.
The most common surnames found in the parish registers include: Furber, Mullins, Reakes, Gane, Penny, Lane, Boyce, Allen and Rossitter, all of which remain unchanged from their earliest mentions.
OCCUPATIONS
At one time the silk factories in Shapway Lane, Evercreech and in nearby Milton Clevedon, employed many of the villagers. But the main occupations of the inhabitants of Evercreech throughout the ages would be as farmers and agricultural labourers.
The very first recorded occupation in the parish register is of a weaver called Raffe Lane who was buried in 1544. Alice Bryce was marrying Raffe Churchouse in 1555 when she was employed as a servant to Raffe Hannam. Margaret Raynall, a servant to Thomas Frye, died in 1555. Up until 1561 occupations were often recorded at the time of death. In the first twenty years, 14 husbandmen, 7 servants, 6 labourers, a weaver, tailor and curate were buried.
The new incumbent in 1561, elaborated his burials in to the area of relationship and residence and occupations were left unstated for many years.
Even so, a glimpse at the type of occupations held by the villager can be picked up in the early 1800s from christening records and from cross-referencing the censuses with the parish registers.
The existence of the silk mills in the area, during the 18OOs provided employment for many young girls. As these were also the years of exploiting child labour, children as young as nine are recorded in the censuses as being employed there as silk winders and weavers.
The Milton Clevedon factory was sold in 1830. The Evercreech mill disappeared around the 1860s. The village from then on was deprived of an industry which had kept many of them employed.
The opening of the railway in some way compensated, at least the men, for the lack of jobs. Although the railways also brought in many outsiders into the village, and also took away some of the families into other areas of work.
Some of the more unusual occupations recorded in the village was as, a chimney sweep, a solicitor's writing clerk, a mole catcher, a printer, a page, a hawker, a straw bonnet maker, a cheese seller and a Pensioner of Bengal.
A police constable was added to the village workforce by 1871 as well as the normal railway connected occupations such as signalmen, carmen, railway labourers, porters and coachmen.
A postal service is first noted in the area with James Dawe as postman, the blacksmith doubling his duties to be another post man, and James Clifford as a 'post rural messenger'
Doubling jobs was common. the grocer was formerly, ' a corporal of the royal rifles', and often innkeepers were also coopers, or butchers.
The tide of employment changed with the opening & closing of the silk mills and with the advent of the railway. The latter added new blood in to the area, but changed the character of the village. Many families moved away and only remnants could be found still living there in 1881.
Today, only a few of the early families are listed in the electoral rolls for the district. Rossitter, Reakes, Southway, Webb, Cox, and Chinnock are some of the names in the 1975 electoral roll that could claim descent back through the village parish registers for several generations.
TRAGEDIES.
Tragedies can affect a family and , or, a village. Smallpox was one such cause of village concern, especially when it claimed the lives of fifteen people within six months, and most of those victims were children.
Even earlier than November 1838, when the major plague was raging, occasional entries in the burial registers mention smallpox as a cause of death. One can only imagine the thoughts of the villagers about new scientific break-throughs in medicine, when two young girls died of 'smallpox through innoculation'
Since the cause of death was not always included in the burial entries, it cannot be accurately ascertained how everyone died ,or how many were victims of smallpox.
Deaths in childbirth certainly took its toll. Evidences of a young bride dying within a few years of marriage, often points to death through child bearing , or from a 'fever' connected with the birth.
1833 - Ann Backhouse wife of John Backhouse alias Rossiter, a barber, daughter of William and Keziah Boyce, 46yrs, (fever after childbirth).
Ann left nine children for husband John to look after. He was only a worsted twister and Greenwich Pensioner so he would have had a struggle to support his family without a wife and the welfare assistance that we are allowed today.
Infant mortality was more prevalent in days past, nevertheless, the death of an infant in many cases would have caused great despair. How more so tragic was it for the families who lost many children in infancy?
An Early Evercreech family, Harry & Elizabeth Cozens lost eight children as babies, as well as a son and daughter aged twelve and ten. Edmund Penny and Betty had ten children but lost five as infants, one as a teenager and one aged twenty.
Francis Pittard/Peters, lost five of his ten children in the one year of 1780. Two other children born later also died young.
John Golledge fathered ten children from two marriages, but lost two of the daughters of his first marriage ,as infants. His wife also died bearing the youngest one, and then all four children of his second marriage died as babies. Only his eldest son lived.
Even besides the epidemics, death in childbirth and infant mortality, tragedies occurred through accidents then as they do now.
Sarah Bennett was only 23, when she died suddenly in an Attorney's office in Wells. Elizabeth Vaughan, 60, had cancer in the breast, a common cause of death even today. Two little boys were burnt to death and a work accident ki l led John Gane as he was loading timber onto a cart. He was only thirty-two and left a young wife and two little girls. My ancestor, Edward Reakes contacted rabies from his job as a thatcher.
A strangulated hernia killed John Coles. Measles, apoplexy, paralysis, dropsy and the all encompassing 'visitations of God' claimed many victims. But there were also those unexplained deaths. Mary Rideout, who was found..' dead in a ditch'.. Could she have been perished through murder? And Mark Reakes's burial entry is intriguing. Aged only thirty, married with a family, Mark met his death in 1858 when he also was found dead in a field.
' ...the doctors after a post mortem examination, but not at the inquest, found a disorder about the heart which caused his death after penetration. '
James Brooks was also found dead in a field, but comments about his belonging to the poor house, insinuate suicide. Lucy Baker's death was certainly noted as such. She hung herself, through insanity.
Emmanuel Hill was run over by a wagon, and Elisha Bendle died in the poor house after being burnt on the lime kiln at Evercreech. Another man was gored to death by a bull.
The burial registers are full of these snippets of human tragedy. Some of the causes of death at that time, could be combated today by modern medicine, but the cancer, accidents, suicides and murders occur at any time.
CONCLUSION
Elizabeth Maudley had the dubious honour of being the first single woman recorded in the registers as having her base born son, John, baptised in February 1570. From then, until some 310 years later, more than 340 illegitimate births were recorded. Illegitimacy didn't only affect offspring of single women; married women living in adulterous situations came in for a great deal of scorn in the registers. Some families repeated illegitimacy throughout several generations. Women appear in the registers, living in de-facto relationships, which are brought to light when their children are baptised.
The conditions of those days where divorce was not available and the seeming lack of education could contribute to this situation, although Evercreech did have 'an endowed school for ten boys', and also a National School. Indeed several teachers, pupil teachers and school masters appear in the various censuses. Even in 1600 some sort of education
was being made available because: 'William Androwes, a scole master (sic) was buried.'
The registers of Evercreech therefore reflect the character of the village, through the lives of its people. The fears of a wife dying in childbirth, then the anxiety over the health of the baby, are normally things we take for granted today. The growing pains associated with childhood and youth would basically be appreciated by us today, as well as the search for a spouse, the desire for a home, and the security of a good job.
Having so many years recorded in the registers, whole families can be traced for generations, each person virtually living and dying in the valley, at the foot of the Mendips.
Many other things could be analysed from the records, which are the second oldest set in Somerset. Literacy and accounting of how many spouses were not born in the parish are just two of the things which could be explored.
As it is, the basic interest lies in the contents of the records and the stories behind them. Snippets of intriguing information recorded for posterity, promising a tragic or joyful tale if only one could complement them with newspaper reports.
If anyone needed a valid reason for recording family history
as it happens this short glimpse into the Evercreech registers hopefully will encourage people to record details for posterity with as much information as possible. May we see more Reverend John West's amongst the record keepers of the past and present~ thereby producing a book worthy of its keeper.

Please note that all entries quoted are from the Evercreech parish registers. The following are footnotes with additional information.
1. J.1. Rowes unpublished manuscript on The History of Evercreech (undated- but approx 1945) held by the Somerset Record Office Taunton. (Copy held by myself). He has no reference sources but the date of 1292 comes from an entry valuing the church at nine marks.
2. For this thesis I have considered the time period 1540-1881, but of course the actual registers are up to 1983.

8. The name in both cases was spelt Raffe.
9. The Lane family were even found resident there in the 1970s. The last known Poynten entry was made in 1854 when Susan Pointing 'a widow' died aged 87.
10. Son of John Clipson
11. The Churchouse family are a prime example. In 1653 the last
christening entered for this family was James the son of Ralph
and Ann. No further entries are recorded, yet 46 baptisms had
been counted til then, with 14 weddings and 27 burials. The
Churchouses were not necessarily prominent. Two died and were
referred to as 'poor '
12. An excellent example for anyone checking the Honeyfield family is when James Honeyfield was christened in 1829. He was ' born February 26 1828 and baptised 8 January 1829, the son of Robert and Rachel Honeyfield, their second child. At Evercreech. But Robert Honeyfield is at work at present in Yeovil'
13. Reverend Wests term of office was from 1825-1840.
14. Rodbard & Dugdale were at one time vicars in Evercreech. Cozens

prominent merchant.
15. Born about 1700
16. Their mother suffered the fate of having the unusual christian
name of Theodosia which brought on the variations of Theophillia
Theophia and Theodocia.
Other examples of name changing include Bakehouse becoming
Backhouse; Roles, as Rolles &Rowles , and my own Reakes name
was recorded under: Raikes, Rex, Reeks and Ricks. Another familv who were living contemporaly to the Lane/Matthews ,was the Simes alias Davis family, who were
referred to as Simes or Davis or Simes alias Davis.

21. Evidence from marriages for the twenty years of 1860-80 shows that 42 of the spouses came from other parishes in the county, and 13 spouses came from other counties.
22. Two other sons, William and Charles died at the ages of 33 and 21. A daughter, Mary, who married the local magistrate,William Rodbard, died in 1756 aged only 37.
23. A similar situation occurred for Casbert Rossiter, who was the father of twenty children. He lost four of them in 1813. William Keates who had 9 children lost 3 in 1849 and I in 1851.
24. Mary Ploughman the wife of Ambrose Tanner, co-habited with James Crocker to the horror of the local vicar, and subsequently had several children to James.Mary Oatley admitted to having had an adulterous relationship with Joseph Oatley whilst still married to Thomas Francis. Two children were christened in Evercreech, alongside which entries is the whole story surrounding their birth. Something Joseph Oatley tried to conceal.

SOME MEMORIES OF GROWING UP IN EVERCREECH –
Terry Parfitt - Sweden-
Sorry to trouble you but I was very impressed with your Homepage about Evercreech and the Reakes and Flook families. (I had an Uncle called George Reakes in Evercreech. Possibly no connection as there are the Parfitts at Spargrove who are, to my knowledge, no connection to my family)
Once again, thank you very much for all your efforts. When you are far from home, and sick, it is wonderful to see your home page and think back because I had a wonderful childhood in Evercreech. I read on the messages to your homepage that there is a historical society in Evercreech and I am trying to find out who is responsible. I have tried to write down my memories of growing up in Evercreech, perhaps I can share this with others?
I also have a carton of photographs that my mother collected and, frankly, have no idea who half of them are, but it might be good for posterity!
My stepmother was houskeeper to a Mr. Aurther Allen who lived at 'The Glen' at Evercreech and spent many years in Australia, he had a son or grandson, Rodney who now lives near Perth.
My name is Terrance (Terry) Parfitt

My Uncle George Reakes was, I believe, half-brother to Uncle Charlie Hayes. My mother's maiden name was Hayes and her parents ran the Shapway Arms Pub in Shapway Lane. Not sure how familiar you are with the map of Evercreech. Shapway Lane runs from Victoria (the main village) Square towards Stoney Stratton. Believe they also owned the Bell Inn (between the church and cemetary) at one time.
Uncle George (Reakes) and Uncle Charlie Hayes farmed next door to each other at Pecking Mill, just outside Evercreech on the main road between Castle Cary and Shepton Mallet. I remember as a small boy that Uncle George used to do the milk round and I remember his little van with milk churns from which he ladled out the milk into small milk containers that we had at home. How did we manage without a fridge in those days?
When Uncle George sold the farm he moved to Shapway Lane, (near 'The Glen' where my stepmother was housekeeper for Arthur Allen), and later to a house near Charlton Musgrove. I went to his wedding but can't remember his wife's name (yet). They married late in life and don't think there were any children.
Both Uncles George and Charlie were active members of the annual pantomime which was put on in the Village Hall in Victoria Square, arranged by Percy Allen, son 'young Percival' and daughter, who was always the leading lady!
Although I have written reams of paper 'off the top of my head'
With family names, shopkeepers, friends of the family, etc. now it has to be written out. It's amazing how much I remember, but frustrating how many gaps there are.
I have tried to draw a map of Evercreech, but it's not easy. Although it is only a sketch it triggers the memory and I've tried to put in who lived where.
Regarding the photographs, they are still in a carton in Wells with my stepmother. After my father died there was a rush to clear out the house before my stepmother moved to sheltered accommodation. The photos are a single remainder of my childhood that I was able to save. Sad isn't it. I was hoping that my Grandmother's second husband, who lives at Cranmore, could help me identify some of the people in the photographs, but he is almost 90 and recently in poor health and I don't know when I can get back to the UK next time. Sad that I used to be over two or three times per month, negotiating with customers like British Airways and Bankers Trust, MOD, etc.
My brother born '44 recently moved back from Plymouth to North Brewham, near Bruton, to be nearer our remaining relatives. He was ordained a couple of years ago in Wells Cathedral and took a service a few weeks ago at St. Peters Parish Church in Evercreech. He mentioned that it is beautifully looked after. People came up to him and said they remembered his in-laws, who lived next door to us and were very active in the Methodist Church in Evercreech. My brother originally went to Sexey School Bruton, Now he has held several services and regular visits to Sexeys Hospital. Several times he bumped into one of the Babers from Stoney Stratton who still have a farm by the old forde. Small world. We used to play there with their two sons, and "Help" on the farm. What memories!
Unfortunately I heard yesterday that my brother is in Frenchay Hospital and has undergone unawaited brain surgery. We are awaiting news of the outcome.
I read that you are also producing something about Milton Clevedon. There was always a scout camp each year near the river bridge at the bottom of the hill. I remember the quaint old school on the right. Did you know that Sir Michael Redgrave used to live opposite, on the small road going down to the church? I read with interest that there were silk mills both in Evercreech and at Milton Clevedon, but where?
As a schoolboy as well as helping on a bakers' round, from Ditcheat, covering the whole area round Evercreech to Bruton and Castle Cary, later on I was responsible for the grocery round from Hutchings shop in Evercreech.
It's odd, living in the capital of Sweden and travelling the big wide world, no one knows about Evercreech. When I renew my passport at the embassy they say they have never heard of my place of birth, am I sure that it is in England?! Therefore I jumped when I saw your homepage.
