James Hickok

By Ann

I don't feel I can do justice to this character in a short biography. James Butler (aka Wild Bill) Hickock is arguably the most loved character on TYR. Jimmy gradually emerged as the star of the show, having more episodes as the protagonist than any other character. In season one, he was a belligerent hot-head, but under the guidance of Teaspoon and the others, gradually became more sensitive, restrained and mature. Jimmy is a tortured man, tortured by his memories and his past deeds that keep coming back to haunt him. He has a deep admiration and love for Lou (which often leads to conflict with the Kid), he feels he doesn't deserve a woman because he could only bring her pain. Despite this, he is a bit of a ladies' man. His main love interests were:

Emma Shannon - Jimmy and Emma are held captive in a fort run by a mad man. It is freezing cold and Jimmy warms Emma up by giving her his coat and placing his hands on her face. Emma tells him that her husband used to do that and relates the story of when her husband left her after her baby died. Jimmy says he would never leave her and they share a tender kiss. Emma tells him that she cannot love him and that he is too young. When Sam comes at the end he realizes he can't have her. He only has to wait an episode or two until he meets.......

Sarah Downs - He is blown away when she flirts with him and he falls for her hard (much to the amusement of the other riders, he comes back to the station with a flower in his lapel). When he introduces himself to her father, the man informs her that he is her husband. Sarah, along with her lover, frame Jimmy for the murder of her husband. Jimmy is the last one to realize it and gets led to the gallows for her. Lou and Buck then find out that the woman has done this before and Jimmy is set free.

Alice - When Jimmy is shot, he seeks refuge in an Amish style commune. There he falls for Alice, a member of the sect. She teaches him that violence is not the answer. Jimmy grows to like the life on the commune and he puts his guns away. When a hired-gun goes after him, he realizes he can never put them down and leaves. This is a sweet episode and I think James really does fall in love.

Louise Mcloud - These two have been the subject of many debates on the message board as well as the subject of a lot of fan fictions. There are several episodes where they are seen flirting. Who can forget the scene where they danced in Willow Creek? Or when they shared a kiss in 'The Blood of Others'? Although Lou and Jimmy probably would of made a wonderful couple, it was not to be for she was in love with the Kid and Jimmy realized that the Kid would be the better man for her anyway. Although, Kid had to beat him up a few times before he realized it.

Rosemary Burke - Everyone's favorite (not). Jimmy first falls for Rosemary when he goes to visit his sister. He later finds out that she is married to the head of an abolitionist group. She later comes back in the last two episodes after she has been widowed. She is the catalyst for Noah's death and causes a rift between Kid and Jimmy. I guess she is hated by the fans of the show because she is the reason it all ended. I think James really did love her and they understood each other's pain. (In real-life, Hickock did marry an older woman.)

Jimmy also had a special bond with Teaspoon, Emma, Jesse, Lou, Kid, Noah... well everyone I guess. He gets into a lot of trouble when a dime-book novelist gives him an undeserved reputation. People start to challenge him and it seems that everywhere he goes trouble follows. Because of this, he doesn't hold much hope for the future but after he's dead, he hopes people realize that he always did what he thought was right.
