EXT. BUNKHOUSE - NIGHT
Crickets chirp. The moon lights the sky. Hickok and the Kid clean saddles, digesting dinner. Cody’s leaning back on a post, eyes closed, his hat covering his eyes.
(dreamy)
I wonder what she’s doin’ right now.
(turns to the Kid)
What do you think?
THE KID
I don’t know, but whatever it is I wish you were doing it with her.
HICKOK
What’s eatin’ you?
THE KID
Nothin’s eatin’ me. You’re just drivin’ us crazy with all this mysterious woman talk.
Cody tilts back his hat.
You two wanna button it up?
Not Hickok.
You mean I ought to handle things more like you.
THE KID
What’s that supposed to mean?
HICKOK
That ain’t the look of a brother watchin’ his sister when you stare at Lou.
THE KID
One girl ropes you in and all of a sudden you’re an expert on man-woman stuff.
HICKOK
I ain’t no expert on man-woman stuff. I just got the guts to do somethin’ about it.
Cody’s pissed. Can’t a guy get a quiet night ‘round here. Tilts his hat up. Opens his eyes.
Ain’t love grand.
Hickok gets up. Storms away. Cody just tilts his hat back over his eyes and goes back to sleep.
What I like most is the way it keeps us all together nice and friendly-like.
The Kid follows after Hickok.
EXT. STABLE
Hickok walks off alone. the Kid comes up from behind. grabs Hickok by the arm and spins him around.
Leave Lou out of this.
They stand toe to toe. Anger is building.
You know, I’m gettin’ tired of you tellin’ me what to do.
THE KID
Maybe if you did more listening, you wouldn’t need so much telling.
Lou appears out of the dark, carrying her saddle. Concerned.
What’s goin’ on?
THE KID
Nothin’.
HICKOK
She wasn’t talkin’ about you an her. She was talkin’ about you and me.
Hickok stalks off alone. Lou watches him; then turns to the Kid. She’s not happy.
Why do you keep doggin’ him?
THE KID
Me...? What are you gettin’ on me for.
LOU
Nobody ever died of a broken heart, Kid.
Lou storms off. Leaves the Kid all alone to his thoughts.
