EXT. WAY STATION - AT THE LAUNDRY LINES-DAY

Lou’s giving Rachel a hand folding the sun-dried laundry. Sheet after sheet, they work together. Something’s on Lou’s mind, but she hasn’t gotten around to talking about it yet.

RACHEL

I want to thank you for lending a hand Louise. The boys seem to think I do all this for my own personal enjoyment.

LOU

Well, I’ve been as guilty of that as the rest of them.

RACHEL

I think that can be excused. After all, the amount of time you spent talking and acting like them, you can’t be surprised if a little bit of their attitude wore off.

LOU

Lately it seems like a lot more than a little bit.

Rachel looks at Lou--clearly this is what Lou’s got on her mind.

RACHEL

What do you mean?

LOU

(opening up)

Rachel, I’ve been in a man’s world for so long I’m afraid I’m beginning to act like one.

RACHEL

(smiles)

Don’t look like it from here.

LOU

No? Yesterday I did something no self-respectin’ woman would ever do.

RACHEL

(intrigued)

Really? What?

LOU

(Scandalous)

I walked in on Kid in the shower.

RACHEL

So?

LOU

So, I didn’t walk out, leastways not as fast as I should.

Rachel smiles.

RACHEL

I think that can be excused. After all, you and Kid have been liking each other for...

LOU

(Interrupting, downcast)

And all we been doin’ is likin’ each other...

Lou catches herself, ashamed.

LOU

There I go again. I sound more like a man every time I open my mouth.

Lou turns away in embarrassment. Rachel shakes her head with a soft smile, then turns Lou gently back around to face her.

RACHEL

Where’d you get the idea men and women are all that different?

LOU

Well, in the shower, for one place.

RACHEL

I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about inside.

Lou frowns.

LOU

I don’t know. Just seems like men spend all their time talkin’ about what they want and how to get it.

RACHEL

And you think women are all that different? We’ve got needs, too. We’re just capable of doing without a little longer, that’s all.

Lou looks at Rachel. Nods.

LOU

I guess people just don’t expect us to speak up, huh?

RACHEL Maybe not, but you’re never going to get anywhere by doing what others expect.

(beat)

You want something, you’ve got to ask for it.

A long beat as Lou mulls that over Finally:

LOU

Well, I’m willin’ to give it a try...

(beat)

...but do you think Kid ever will?

RACHEL

(mischevious)

After yesterday? I wouldn’t be surprised.

The two women share a smile.
