Day comes to the small town as we hear:
Sun’s comin’ up.
INT. DAVENPORT MARSHAL’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS where Lou moves away from the window and looks over at Kid, who extinguishes a lamp. Both still dressed in last night’s clothes; Lou now wearing Kid’s coat. Both weary. The prisoner Dawkins watches from the lone cell as Kid offers lou a tired smile before the coldness of reality sets back in.
Think they’re gonna come back?
Kid moves to the cell at the rear of the office. Takes a good look at Dawkins: the boy stares back at Kid, bravado in his eyes and posture.
What do you think, huh? Your friends want you bad enough?
DAWKINS
‘Course they do. We stick together.
Kid shakes his head at this boy’s attitude, his swagger.
How old are you? Sixteen?
DAWKINS
(defiant)
Seventeen. Almost eighteen.
Kid nods at the Office door -- at last night.
What’re you doin’ ridin’ with men like that? Didn’t your family teach you any better?
DAWKINS
They are my family.
Kid sighs and turns away. Lou looks at him with concern.
How long do you think it’ll take Teaspoon to get here?
KID
At least tomorrow. next day at the latest. Too long.
DAWKINS
Why don’t you just let me go?
Kid turns back to the cell. Doesn’t need Dawkin’s opinion.
Why don’t you just be quiet?
DAWKINS
(to Lou)
What about you Miss? Ain’t this kinda dangerous for a lady like you?
It’s the way Dawkins is looking at Lou more than what he said that sets Kid off. He’s at the bars in a flash.
Are you gonna shut your mouth or am I gonna do it for you?
A beat, Lou watching in the background, then Kid takes a step back. Dawkins looks at him intently.
Tell me somethin’: what do you care what happens here anyway?
KID Just wanta do what’s right.
DAWKINS
Big job for someone who ain’t even wearin’ a badge.
Kid turns back to the Office and notices the Deputies badge sitting on a desk. looks at Lou for a moment, then looks back at Dawkins.
Maybe you’re right.
Dawkins just smirks.
