Thanks to Kellie Barnes, I can tear our weekend's performance apart in excrutiating detail and attempt to lend insight into how we're going to take our squad, as they say, "To the next level." Stats may not be the whole story, but they certainly reveal undeniable trends. SECTION 1: Points Played Everyone has been listed and ranked according to the number of points they played as a ratio of how many points were available. (This helped balance the two games Matt missed but does not address time spent out because of injury.) I'll not editorialize, and there are certainly some stories behind this more complex than merely "Chuck never puts himself in" and "Lehner is a point hog". Nonetheless, I certainly found some of the data below interesting. pa - points available pp - points played ppg - average points per game player pa pp pp/pa ppg 1 marya 113 58 51% 9.7 2 meghan 113 57 50% 9.5 3 chris 113 56 50% 9.3 4 lena 113 56 50% 9.3 5 merde 113 54 48% 9.0 6 mark 113 50 44% 8.3 7 brian 113 48 42% 8.0 8 matt 82 32 39% 8.0 9 linus 113 44 39% 7.3 10 khamby 113 41 36% 6.8 11 amy 113 40 35% 6.7 12 shaggy 113 39 35% 6.5 14 david 113 38 34% 6.3 13 shiv 113 38 34% 6.3 15 sydney 113 36 32% 6.0 16 chuck 113 35 31% 5.8 17 mck 113 35 31% 5.8 SECTION 2: Scoring This was perhaps the most surprising team statstic. I took everything as a ratio of points played and ranked everyone based on their combined scores and assists per points played. Most revealing is the break between the genders. What this tells me is, despite our excellent work balancing the disc touches on the field, we still need to work on balancing our endzone play between the genders. I also found interesting the balance for players between scores and assists. I expected dominance of assists for Chuck and Hamby as well as a bias toward scores for Meghan, Marya and McKinley. However, I was surprised by the fact that Lehner had so many more assists than scores and Matt so many more scores than assists. player pp a s s+a/pp pp/pa s/a a/s 1 david 38 8 8 42% 14 1.00 1.00 2 chris 56 13 7 36% 3 0.54 1.86 3 linus 44 7 7 32% 9 1.00 1.00 4 shiv 38 6 6 32% 13 1.00 1.00 5 matt 32 3 7 31% 8 2.33 0.43 6 mark 50 7 7 28% 6 1.00 1.00 7 kelley 41 7 4 27% 10 0.57 1.75 8 chuck 35 8 1 26% 16 0.13 8.00 9 brian 48 4 3 15% 7 0.75 1.33 10 mck 35 1 4 14% 17 4.00 0.25 11 shaggy 39 1 4 13% 12 4.00 0.25 12 marya 58 1 5 10% 1 5.00 0.20 13 meghan 57 1 4 9% 2 4.00 0.25 14 amy 40 1 2 8% 11 2.00 0.50 15 merde 54 1 3 7% 5 3.00 0.33 16 lena 56 2 2 7% 4 1.00 1.00 17 sydney 36 0 0 0% 15 n/a n/a SECTION 3: Turnovers Allright, before you even look at the numbers, just get the fact out of your system that you think the men have more turnovers. I haven't looked at the numbers yet, but that's certainly what I think is the case. Let's see... Shite. Not only was I right, but now I beg that we never again speak of this list again until I am removed from the top of it. Okay, yea, our men freewheel with the disc more than the ladies. (Although it would have been particularly interesting to compare these stats with touches, which is significantly more difficult to track.) I would love to see us all (especially me) improve on our performance in this stat. It, more than any other, will be indicative of our performance in difficult games. player pp to to/pp 1 shiv 38 9 24% 2 matt 32 7 22% 3 david 38 8 21% 4 chris 56 10 18% 5 kelley 41 7 17% 6 brian 48 8 17% 7 chuck 35 5 14% 8 mck 35 5 14% 9 shaggy 39 5 13% 10 mark 50 6 12% 11 linus 44 5 11% 12 merde 54 5 9% 13 lena 56 3 5% 14 meghan 57 2 4% 15 amy 40 1 3% 16 marya 58 1 2% 17 sydney 36 0 0% Another thing worth mentioning: Kellie kept track of whether the turnovers were throws or catches for the Pigs game on Sunday. We had 19 turnovers attributed to throws and only 3 for catches. That, together with a quick reflection on your personal memory of your turnovers, should be motivation enough to work on throwing decisions and/or execution. For me, it's all about chilling out, being patient and keeping a cool head when the disc is in my hands. SECTION 4: Gimme more D sir, gimme more D! Getting the D is an art (and a helluva lot of work.) We could all be more tenatious on D. (Yea, even McGhee -- raise the bar, Jose!) Instead of praising our big D kids, I want to mention that this stat does not show is how many times we denied the disc (all of those times when we were so tight on our matches that they were completely looked off.) It's one of the more subtle parts of the game but one we should recognize as well, even if we do not have a stat for it. Heck, every time we are all playing tight, we force a bad throw and get someone on the team a D. Yea, that's why Mark and Lehner got so many. Because the rest of us did our job. Hey, it may not be as much of a stretch as you think. There only needs to be one open player on the field to give the other team an easy pass. Anyway... player pp d d/pp 1 mark 50 12 24% 2 chris 56 8 14% 3 matt 32 4 13% 4 merde 54 6 11% 5 david 38 3 8% 6 shaggy 39 3 8% 7 chuck 35 2 6% 8 mck 35 2 6% 9 shiv 38 2 5% 10 kelley 41 2 5% 11 linus 44 2 5% 12 brian 48 2 4% 13 sydney 36 1 3% 14 amy 40 1 3% 15 meghan 57 1 2% 16 lena 56 0 0% 17 marya 58 0 0% SECTION 5: A Tale of Two Pigs I broke down the two Pigs games and looked at the stats. PT was similar for most players in the two games. Interestingly, we also had the exact same number of points played (23) and turnovers (22) in the two games. However, other than the scores (13-10 and 15-7), the only stat I found that was any different was D's (11 Saturday and only 5 on Sunday.) Clearly, the Pigs turned up their game Sunday with fewer turnovers (forced and unforced) to alter the results. We need to be able to turn up (or maintain) the intensity of our game as well. We've proved to ourselves we are able. Now we need to do it every game and make it a habit. Only then will other teams quake in fear (or at least groan) when they learn they will be playing Skin&Bones. Later, shiv.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
