Watch something completely mindless together, play cards, take a short walk if she feels like she needs one - tease each other like you always do. A sense of humor'll be important in the near-term (and once you bring home your new addition, now dubbed  Wakes Up Crying at Silly Hours , for that matter). Keep up your own strength. Eat something and prepare something for you to eat while at the hospital (her eating will be restricted, but you ll probably not want to make a jaunt down to the cafeteria or vending machine if hunger strikes you). Just make sure that it doesn t have a strong odor - she may throw you out of the room during active labor if the smell gets to her. While you re at the apartment, make sure she eats a light snack or two while you re waiting (toast with jam or a fruit Popsicle are good), avoiding anything heavy or hard to digest (no meat, no dairy, no OJ). Make sure that everything s packed that ya ll might need. Remember the cell phone and/or a list of the numbers of people that you d like to or need to contact. The Second Phase: Active Labor This part usually lasts 2 - 3 1/2 hours, although don t panic if it takes longer. The contractions are getting stronger (much stronger), longer (40-60 seconds), and more frequent (3-4 minutes apart or so). There ll be less time for Corri to rest between contractions, and each contraction ll take more out of her.
