Baitcasting Basics
- Baitcasting Rods (11-13ft fast action rods made local in Hawaii with 14-18 tip and steel butt cap)
- Reels (smaller penn or newell reels in the 3/0 size range)
- 30-50lb Line
- 1/0 barrel swivels
- 60-100lb wire leader
- 20-24 tankichi hooks or equivalent
- Sand spikes and strong cord to tie down your rod(so the waves,and fish will not take it from you!)
- 4-8oz weights (with or without grabber wires. you need the wires in strong currents)
- Headlamp to see with, good shoes or tabis, extra headlamps, camping gear for staying overnight, and food and water.
- Bait (tako legs, Tohei, or small live baits, etc.)
Additional gear needed for Slide Bait Fishing
- Slidebait Rods (12-14ft fast action rods with 18-24 tips, steel buttcaps and heavy duty guides)
- Reels (penn 4/0 or larger, newell 545-646 or equivalent)
- 50-100lb Line
- Slide stops, and pigtail slide swivels
- 200-300lb mono or wire leader
- 30-50lb leadline
- 8-12oz weights w/ wire legs
- Big ulua hooks (50+, 16-20 tuna circle)
- Headlamp,tabis,pole or slide gaff, tie downs, camping gear, etc.)
- Bait (whole Tako, Eel fillets, live bait, etc.)
