Chapter 124

Camp didn't work out. I'm back. Make sure you post on my message board that's at the top of the main story page.

"Excuse me?" Taylor asked, his eyes wide. "Gabi is back? How can you be back when you're dead?"

Carter shrugged and was about to speak when Taylor cut her off.

"You know what? Don't answer that. I don't want to hear about it. This kind of stuff freaks me out."

Carter laughed. "It freaks you out? What about me? I watched The Scariest Places On Earth a few days ago and I haven't slept since. I don't think you should be allowed to do a show on the Jersey Devil on the Family Channel. I'm writing them a letter."

"Carter, quit joking." Taylor shivered. "You come in here telling me Gabi is back and then you start joking."

"Hey, you're not the one who saw her. How do you think we feel?" She asked, grabbed Zac's hand.

"You saw her?" Taylor asked Zac, happy for a second opinion.

"Well, I saw something."

"Something?"

"A hand. And part of a dress. I guess... it could have been Meli. Or your mom."

"Mom's not home. And I haven't seen Meli today." Taylor sighed.

Carter nudged Zac. "Mel doesn't wear long, mystical, flowing dresses. And she DOESN'T STAND IN A HALLWAY SMILING AT ME, LOOKING LIKE GABI!"

Zac sighed. "Alright, alright. So what do we do?"

"We could have a seance." Carter looked down, not really sure if she wanted to do that.

"You're going to hell." Taylor mumbled, sitting down on his bed.

"I'll send you a postcard."

"I'm not doing a seance. I'm not communicating with the dead. And so help me God if I see Gabi I will scream like a girl." Taylor looked genuinely terrified and Zac couldn't help but laugh.

"Guys, you really are making too much of this. Carter has a wild imagination..."

"You wanna join Gabi?" Carter asked, glaring and threatening Zac.

He cringed. "And I've never been too sure about Tanis's claim that day in the garage. She fell through the ceiling, she obviously hit her head."

"Did I hit my head? Uhm. No?"

Zac laughed. "You're forgetting that you were flamingly drunk not too long ago."

"Zac, I know what I saw. I've only been drunk twice in my lifetime but there were no ghost sightings the first time. And I'm pretty sure drunk people don't see ghosts."

Taylor sighed. "Crazy people do."

"I repeat... DO YOU WANNA JOIN GABI?!" Carter yelled. "Didn't think so. I'll make you guys a deal, I'll try to forget what I saw."

"Good." They answered in unison.

"But I swear if Gabi comes walking down my hallway tonight while I'm sleeping, I'll be waking you both up."

Zac and Taylor agreed and finally convinced Carter to go to bed. She spent the good part of two hours laying under the blankets, terrified to close her eyes. She finally took a deep breath and rolled over on her side, facing the wall, when she heard footsteps in her hallway. She, jerked her body up into a seating position and grabbed her pillow to protect herself. She sucked in her breath as the shadowy figure stepped into her bedroom. "DIE GHOST BITCH!" She screamed, throwing her pillow at what turned out to be Zac.

Zac ducked and jumped back three feet and then laughed. "Hey." He whispered. "I figured you might want some company since Meli is spending the night on the balcony."

Carter sighed with relief and pulled her covers over so Zac could get into bed with her. "Protect me, strong, manly dude."

Zac laughed and laid down next to her, putting his arm around her stomach. "Don't laugh but, I couldn't sleep either. The thought of a living, breathing, Gabi walking around my house scares the bajeezus out of me, but you add the word 'dead' to the picture and that's a whole new ballpark."

"You're telling me." She sighed and snuggled closer to him. "Can I tell you something without you laughing at me?"

"Sure."

"You make me feel safe."

Zac stayed silent for a moment before finally smiling. "Why would I laugh at that?"

"I don't know. Because it's cheesy and stereotypically unlike me to admit that I'm afraid, let alone admit that somebody makes me feel safe."

He nodded.

"But I mean safe in other ways, too. It's hard to explain."

"I think I know what you mean." He sighed. "I don't know where I'd be in life if I didn't have you."

"Ok, see now you're just getting mushy." Carter laughed and leaned over slightly, kissing his lips. After a few minutes of kissing, they both fell silent.

"Do you think I should cut my hair?" Zac asked, referring to the annoying, hot, mop that fell a few inches below his shoulders.

"Yes."

"Really? Because everybody tells me they can't imagine me with my hair any other way. I mean, Ike cut his short and it was fine. Taylor cut his kinda short and people liked it, then he cut it all off and it still looked cool. But I don't know what to do with mine. I did the shoulder length thing and then it just grew back. I'd do it in shifts to get used to it but maybe I should just cut it all off..."

"FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!" Carter yelled and lightly smacked him. "If you want, I'll get out the scissors and cut it off for you! Just stop stressing over hair! You sound like Isaac."

Zac laughed. "Sorry. Dude next time I start to sound like Isaac, smack me faster."

Carter closed her eyes and began to fall asleep when Zac's voice startled her. "Seriously though, should I cut my hair?"

Carter laughed and wrapped her arms around him, nuzzling her face against his chest.
