Chapter 130

"What are you doing?" Zac leaned over Carter and rested his chin on her shoulder. She was holding a handful of blank, white cards in her fist and she had the phone in her other hand, talking to somebody.

She quickly slammed the phone down and threw the cards behind her. "Nothing. What are you doing?"

Zac gave her a confused look and shook his heads. "What's with all the cards?"

"What's with all of your cards?"

"I don't have any cards."

"Neither do I."

Zac stared at her again. "Ok. Who was on the phone?"

"What phone."

He shook his head. "Ok, I totally give up. Whatever it is you're up to, I don't want to know."

"Good. So what's up."

Zac wimpered and stomped his foot down on the ground. "Carteerrr... Tell me what's going on!"

She laughed and thought for a second. "Ok, if you must know, I was thinking of having a... Halloween party and I was wondering what uhm... Jade thought of that idea. Hense the cards and phone."

"What cards and phone?"

Carter laughed. "So what do you think?"

"Very cool idea. But, what are your plans for oh say, the twenty second?"

Carter thought for a moment. "I got nothin. How bout you? OH I know... let's have the party then. The twenty second sounds like a good time to get all dressed up for a holiday with no real meaning to conventional people on the twenty first century. Besides, it'll be good because it's a little ways away from Halloween and nobody will have any plans for the twenty second."

Zac's expression dropped. "That... sounds great. Count me in."

Carter smiled and gave him a quick kiss. "Great. I'll start calling everybody we know."

"Sure." Zac sighed and left the room. It was unlike her to forget the most important day of his life. He couldn't believe it. He sighed again, louder, and crossed the balcony to Taylor's bedroom. Throwing open the door, het let out a grunt as he glared at Taylor's messy bedroom. "Your room is beginning to look like mine."

Taylor rolled his eyes and straightened his bookshelf. "My room wouldn't look like yours unless Carter cleaned yours eight times."

"Yeah, you're right. She forgot my birthday."

Taylor turned around. "No she didn't. She's planning a huge..."

"A huge what? What's she planning?"

"Nothing. I just assumed she was planning a party or something. She really forgot your birthday? Man, that's harsh." He turned around again and straightened the books he'd just straightened.

"I'll give her a few days. She just started classes so maybe her brain is a little swamped. There's no way she'd forget my birthday."

Taylor shrugged. "We forget hers everywhere."

"That's because you're always in the hospital when she has a birthday."

"NOT TRUE!" He sighed. "She was in the hospital last year. So that wasn't my fault."

"Right." Zac rolled his eyes and left Taylor room and headed for his own. When he got there, he almost jumped to see Carter sitting on his bed with a box in her hands. "Hey."

Carter smiled and patted the bed next to her. She waited for Zac to sit down. "So, here's the deal. I feel really bad about that. I didn't forget your birthday. I wanted you to think I had so I could give you this as a surprise. I know it's not much but it's all I could afford since I started school." She set the box down on his lap.

"Present?"

"I know it's early, but I couldn't torture you like that. I know it's not wrapped but after I bought that I didn't have money for paper. So it was either, pretty blue box, or homemade wrapping paper made out of last Sunday's newspaper comics."

Zac laughed and kissed her cheek. "This is great. I knew you were too perfect to forget." He lifted the lid off of the box and pushed aside the tissue paper. Inside was a thick, black, leather-bound notebook with a metal, silver triquetra printed on the front.

"I had it made. Kind of a thank you for the Book of Shadows."

"It's awesome."

"Open it up."

Zac untied the leather ties that held the book closed and opened to the first page. Inside, were the lyrics to a song, written in script. He read outloud.

I'll Always Be Right There

Written by, Michelle Branch

"When you're all alone and you need a light, someone to guide you through the night, just remember that I am here to hold you close and dry your tears. Just when you thought you were falling but you know I'll always be right there.

When you're all alone and you need a friend, someone to help you to the end, when you need someone to catch you when you fall I'll be there through it all. Just when you thought you were losing but you know I'll always be right there.

And I'll be there through the good times and the bad. And we'll be there for eachother cause you're the best friend I ever had.

Just when you thought you were falling, you know I'll always be right there. Whenever you need me I'll always be right there.

I'll always be right there."

Zac, My own words could never express to you how much you mean to me and have meant to me these past sixteen years. It wasn't until two years ago that I realized we could ever be together like this. You are my everything and every day I fall madly in love with you all over again. Forever. Carter.

Zac stared down at the pages of the open book for a few minutes before finally closing it. He leaned over and wrapped his arms around Carter. "I love you."

"I love you, too." Carter hugged him back and then agve him a kiss. "I have to go back home though because I promised my dad I'd help make dinner."

Zac nodded and held her hand for a minute before finally letting go. "Be back later?"

She laughed. "I'll be back later." Then, she kissed him again and left.

On her way out to the balcony, she tripped over one of Taylor's thick, black boots and stumbled until she ran into the door. "GOD DAMMIT, TAYLOR! Your room is a wreck and I keep tripping over your pretty girly boots all the time!"

He tried hard to ignore her. "You could always just stay out."

"DEATH!" She shouted at him before leaving.

Taylor rolled his eyes and sat down at his computer. "Note to self," He whispered, "Carter needs to get laid."

"I heard that!" Zac shouted from his bedroom and smacked his fist on the wall.

Carter went back to her bedroom and straightened all of the white cards. Then, she picked up the phone and dialed quickly. She waited four rings before she finally answered. "Jade! Yeah sorry, he came in the room and I had to pretend I was blonde. Yeah it's still on, but you have to dress up like it's Halloween. Ok. Spread the word and I'll get the invitations out tomorrow. K. See ya." She put the phone down and grinned. The party of the century was on.
