Chapter 37

Carter wiped her eyes quickly when she heard Zac come into her bedroom. He noticed the tears on her cheeks and walked right over to put his arms around her. "Zac, please don't..."

"What's wrong?" He asked, letting go. "What happened? I was only gone for 5 minutes. I'll get rid of the snake if that's it."

Carter shook her head. "It's not that. My dad came up and told me that he lost his job."

"I thought he already lost it."

"No, he was just laid off. But now they officially let him go. Cutbacks, I think he called it. But uhm... Zac we have no money." She started to cry again and she laid down on the bed with her head on his lap.

Zac ran his fingers through her hair and didn't talk. He just let her cry for fifteen minutes until she finally sat back up and and gave him a huge hug. "I just don't know what to do, Carter, I don't know how to help you on this one."

"It's ok. I don't know how to really help me either. Besides, take that job."

"What's wrong with taking that job."

Carter sniffled again and tried not to cry. "That guy, Todd. I'm afraid.... Zac what if I start to like him? I don't what that to happen, I wanna be with you. But you know me so well, you can read me... you probably already know what i'm thinking."

Zac nodded. "Yeah. I knew when you first told me about him. I know there's something there. And I don't want you to feel like... we could go back to being friends you know? If... I dunno."

"Is that what you want?"

"I think so." Zac took a deep breath. "As much as I love you more than my own life... And it's so weird for us to go back to being just friends. It was weird for us to be boyfriend and girlfriend. And I don't want you to be deprived of having a boyfriend other than me. All I want is for you to be happy and I think I can do that best by just being your friend. Besides, we really disgust Taylor and Ike."

Carter laughed and hugged Zac. "Did you just break up with me?" She asked, staring into his hazel eyes.

"Yup." Zac kissed her forehead and gave her another hug. "You sleepin here tonight?"

"I think I might sleep on the balcony, it's really hot."

"Well, I'll check later on and if you're out there, I'll join you. Ok?"

Carter nodded. "Nite Zac."

The minute Carter finished putting on her pajamas the phone rang. "Damn Zac." She laughed.

"It's not me." His voice came from the walkie talkie.

"Oh. Hello?" She asked, picking up the phone.

"Is Carter home?"

"This is Carter. Who's this?"

"Todd."

"Hi Todd!" Carter emphasized the Todd so that Zac could hear.

He laughed. "What are you wearing Todd?"

"Shut up Zac."

"Huh?" Todd asked, confused.

"Nothing. What's up? How'd you get my number?"

"Abby."

"Oh."

Zac yawned. "You guys have boring phone sex."

"Shut up Zac, we broke up 5 minutes ago and already you want me to bang a stranger over the phone. I think the medication is getting to your head."

Todd coughed. "Excuse me?"

"Nothing. Don't worry about it."

"Ok. Listen, Abby just told me that you and Zac broke up."

"Huh? How'd she know."

"She was listening outside your door and she called me right afterwards."

"Why would she do that?"

"I dunno." Todd grinned on his side of the phone. "I was just wondering. Would it be too early to pick you up on a rebound?"

"Yes it would."

"Why?"

"Because, did you ever think about the fact that I might be heartbroken and crying my eyes out because my boyfriend dumped me 5... 7 minutes ago?"

Zac laughed. "Crock of shit."

"Shut up."

"Huh?" Todd asked even more confused.

"Nothing. Did you ever think of that? Huh? Did ya?"

"No. Not really. Abby told me that you were laughing when he dumped you."

"Well, Abby's a crackhead. Literally."

"Yeah. So, I guess the rebound thing isn't gonna work?"

"Nope, not gonna work."

Zac sighed. "This sucks, I can only hear one side of the convo... put it on speaker phone."

"I don't have speakerphone you crack monkey."

"What?" Todd sighed. "Are you schizo?"

"Yeah. I'm extremely crazy and unstable and I killed three people last night. All men who tried to pick me up. First I slashed their nads, then twisted their peepees into poodles then I blew them up."

"Right. So..." Todd paused. "Movies tomorrow night?"

"No."

"Dinner at Mcdonalds?"

"I don't eat anything that once had the ability to fart."

"Bummer. Rollerblading?"

"I have to take care of Zac tomorrow. He's not feeling well."

"Don't make me beat you up Carter." Zac laughed, yelling into the walkie talkie.

"Alright, fine. Tomorrow night I'll come play at your dad's, then we'll leave and go to the movies. Then, you take me home. No kiss, possibly a hug, and you keep your hands to yourself at all times. If at any chance you attempt to touch me, I reserve the right to shape your peter into a pretty shape. Can I get that in writing?"

"Sure."

"Ok then. I'll see you tomorrow."

Todd grinned. "Ok then. Goodnight."

"Night." Carter hung up the phone and leaned back on her bed, smiling.

"You're such a freak." Zac laughed.

"I know I am." Carter yawned. "I'm going out on the balcony now. Meet me out there. K?"

"Word."

"K."
