Chapter 44

Carter slammed the door behind her and let out a muffled scream. She wasn't sure how the day could get any worse.

"Whoa, you didn't knock." Zac was sitting on the couch, with his arm around Nique. She had never looked prettier. Her hair was shorter, a little bit past her shoulders. Different strands were gelled to make her hair look pretty wild. She wore a pair of black, wide leg pants and a tight, green turtle neck sweater. Her eyelids were sparkly, and her cheeks were pink. Carter was wrong, her day could get worse.

"You like nice, Nique." She smiled politely. "Did I miss something though, are you two together?"

Nique shook her head. "Not that I know of, are we Zac?"

Zac shrugged. "Nope. So what's wrong, you look pissed."

Carter pulled the window shade aside and looked out. "Todd... I hate him. I had to kick him in the balls. Now Gabi's out there. They make a cute couple. Perfect for eachother. Maybe she's over Tay." She shrugged.

"Stop Zac!" Nique laughed and lunged to the other side of the couch after Zac had poked her repeatedly in the side.

Carter growled. "Well, since nobody notices that I'm here, I'm gonna go upstairs and resort to chatting with Taylor." She practically shouted.

"Huh?" Zac looked up, not hearing a word she had said.

"Nothing." Carter rolled her eyes and left to go upstairs. She knocked on Taylor's door, something she never did. With Zac, she always knocked. It was probably a matter of respect for the person on the other side of the door.

"Hey." Taylor smiled. Carter couldn't help but notice that everybody but her was looking really good today. His hair was shorter, perfect for it to tuck behind his ears. There were two shorter strands that fell into his eyes. He was wearing a pair of baggy jeans, with a hole in one knee (something nobody sees Taylor in), and a tight blue t-shirt.

"Can I come in? I'm experiencing a day full of assholes."

Taylor laughed and let her in. "Sure." He kicked a path to his bed and plopped down onto it. He laid on his back with his arms behind his head.

Carter looked down at the floor and laughed. "Borrowing my boots?"

"Uhm, no?" Taylor blushed. "They wouldn't fit anyway. I don't know how they got here."

"Right." Carter smiled and pulled them on, leaving them unlaced. Then she threw herself onto the bed next to him, laying on her stomach.

Taylor glanced at her uneasily.

"What do you think of Gabi?"

"Is that the one that Melissa called a barbie wannabe whore? That was funny."

"No, that was Abbie."

"Does she have any friend's who's names don't rhyme?"

"Hmm.. Gabi, Abbie, Tabby..."

"Babbi?"

She laughed. "Nope. I think it's just Gabi, Abbie, and Tabby. Gabi's the one with the hair."

"Oh. She's pretty in that... talks like she'll swallow your face kind of way."

"Oh." Carter frowned. "What about Abbie?"

"She's hot. But she's a bitch, too insecure."

"What about...Nique?"

Taylor rolled over onto his side. "What's with you? You've never cared what people think before."

"I don't. I'm just interested in your opinion." Carter smiled, trying to be convincing.

"Yeah right. Why do you care if I think Nique's pretty?" Taylor laughed and rolled back onto his back. "Oh I get it. It's a jealousy thing."

"No! I'm not jealous of her."

"I didn't say that. You're jealous of the fact that Zac is interested in somebody other than you."

"Not true." Carter smiled.

"Then why do you care what I think?"

"Because, everybody seems to be interested in somebody... other than me." Carter fell silent.

"That's not true. Just yesterday Isaac said you have a great ass."

Carter laughed. "Oh wow, there's a compliment. Note to self, kick Isaac's ass."

"Maybe that's your problem."

"What?"

Taylor shrugged. "You scare people."

"Do I scare you?"

"No, because I know you're just full of shit. I know you're just an extremely honest, sarcastic person. But a lot of people can't stand that."

"Then why does Todd want me so bad?"

"Because he's a freak."

Carter laughed and slapped Taylor on his chest. "Funny."

"Ow."

"Anyway, you're right. I don't know why I care what you think. Your opinion means nothing to me."

"Now who's being the funny one?"

Carter laughed and sat up. "You never answered my question. Do you think Nique is pretty?"

Taylor stared at Carter for a long time and then smiled. "Not at all."

"See now, that wasn't so hard was it? By the way, you look hot with your new haircut."

Taylor blushed wildly. "Thanks. I never apologized for... your little hair accident did I?"

"No, but I've grown to like my short hair. I never thanked you." She smiled.

Over the next ten minutes, the room was filled with an uncomfortable silence. Carter wasn't sure how to break it, so she blurted out the first thing that came to mind. "You can borrow my boots if you want too."

Taylor laughed. "I told you, they don't fit."

"Aha! So you did try them on!"

He blushed again. "They're cool shoes. Besides, you have big manly feet.. I was hoping they might fit."

Carter slapped him again. "Shut up. Anyhoo, do you mind if I hang out with you for a while? This is the only room I've been in today that doesn't have an aura of asshole to it."

"Sure."

She smiled and laid back down on the bed. "Thanks."
