Chapter 69

She tucked her long, brown hair into a silver clip and adjusted her long sleeved black turtle neck. Her outfit was accompanied by black flares and thick black boots. She knelt down in the shadows that were made by Carter's balcony. There were four voices. Three she recognized, one she didn't. Out of the three, there was pme that she despised. One that needed to be wiped off the face of the planet, and would be if she had her way. And one of the voices was the love of her life. The man she would marry, have kids with, and live happily ever after with. That is, after she got rid of that other one.

Gabi Tarren was turning out to be more than just your typical petty female snob. Over the past few months she'd managed to scare the crap out Todd and Abby, turning them both into good, wholesome people. That just made her want to puke. Todd had ruined her plan to win Taylor over. He was supposed to take Carter away from Taylor, keeping her to himself so that Gabi could make her move. Too bad that didn't happen. Too bad for Carter.

Gabi heard Carter laugh loudly. She could picture her placing her hand on Taylor's chest and pushing him away lightly. "Stupid bitch." She whispered to herself. She almost wished that Carter was a dirty, ugly skank. Oh well, she could get around her charm. Gabi was afterall beautiful and she knew she could have Taylor if she could just have her chance.

"So, Justine, you'll have to come to Dillie's with us tomorrow night and hear Carter sing." Gabi heard Zac's voice. She wondered who this Justine chick was. Hopefully she wasn't another threat. As she listened though, she realized that Taylor wasn't interested in Justine. Zac seemed to be the smitten one.

Gabi rolled her eyes. "Stupid little Hanson boy. He seriously annoys the hell outta me."

Zac looked out into the yard with a strange look on his face.

"What?" Carter looked over where he was looking.

"Nothing. I just had a total self-esteem leak. I'm feeling really bad about myself all of a sudden."

Carter was sitting with Zac on the leather couch on the balcony, with Taylor sitting on the arm. Carter was leaning on him. Justine was standing against the banister, pretty much just listening in on the conversation. "You really should come Justine." Carter nodded and smiled.

Justine held back her urge to roll her eyes. For some reason, she found no reason to be "buddies" with Carter. "I'll see if I'm allowed." She turned to Zac. "Will you be there?"

He nodded. "Come sit over here instead of over in the shadows."

"But... there's no room."

Zac pushed Carter off of the couch. "Now there is."

"HEY!" She laughed. "Dammit."

Justine looked at the empty spot on the couch for a few seconds before shyly sitting down next to Zac.

Taylor stood up and sat on the banister next to Carter. He slid his arm around her waist and rested his hand on the side of her hip. Carter looked over at him and smiled.

Taylor jumped back and removed his arm from around her when she screamed and grabbed the back of her head. "OW! WHY'D YOU DO THAT?!"

"I didn't!"

Gabi held in her laughter as she grabbed another stone from Carter's yard. "Nah, I better not." She listened on for another few minutes until she started to feel sick to her stomach. Then, she stood up and grinned. She had hatched a whole new plan to win Taylor and she couldn't wait to put it into action. Carter would be singing at Dillie's tomorrow night, and Gabi would surely be there. Before she left, she growled at Carter one more time, grabbed a handful of rocks, and threw them up at her.

"HOLY FREAK WHAT THE HELL?!" Carter fell forward onto the balcony as she was bombarded with about 50 little rocks.

Taylor laughed and fell onto the floor next to her. He was hit in the back of the head also, but oddly, not as hard as she was.

Zac ran to the side of the balcony and looked over the edge to see nothing but a blur of black shadows. "Dude... that was weird."

Carter growled and stood up to brush herself off. "It was probably Jade, she's really pissed at me." She shrugged.

Taylor laughed and started picking at her hair.

"What? What are you doing?"

"You have like, bloody rocks all over you."

"Ew." Carter ran her fingers through her hair and pulled out three more small pebbles. "I'm not going to fight over this stupid thing with Jade. I can't help it."

Taylor and Zac gave her confused stares. "What thing?"

"Oh she has the hots for Taylor."

Taylor's eyes widened and his cheeks reddened. "Dude, why wasn't I informed of this?!"

"Probably the same reason I wasn't." Carter sighed and shrugged.

Justine stood up and put her hands on her hips. "Well, I'm supposed to be home at like..." She looked at her watch. "20 minutes ago."

"I can give you a ride." Carter offered.

"I can walk." Justine turned to hug Zac. "Thanks for letting me come over today. I would have been really bored at Jade's."

Zac hugged her back. "No problem. You can walk down through my house. Everybody else is asleep and Isaac is... helping Melissa with homework last time I checked."

"If that's what you call it now." Taylor laughed.

"Ew." Carter cringed.

"You know what, I'll walk with you. I don't want you walking home in the dark. You might get pounded by ghost rocks." Zac smiled at Carter, put his arm around Justine's shoulder and led him through his house to the front door.

Carter laughed. "I think he just made fun of me."

"Nah."

"Anyway, I'm going to bed." Carter leaned over and kissed Taylor on the cheek.

"Can I surprise you in your sleep again?" His expression perked up.

"Not tonight, soldier. My dad gave me hell today cause he heard somebody in my room last night that didn't sound like Melissa." She laughed and patted him on the head.

"Damn." Taylor gave her a hug and went back inside to e-mail Beth.
