1999 Marching Band "OLD" UNIFORMS NEW UNIFORMS The 1999 Blackhawk High School Marching Band is continuing to build on the success of the the 1998 season. The Division II rating at the prestigious Bands of America Grand National Marching Band Competition highlighted a very eventful performance year. This year, the band hopes to continue these successes and will culminate the 1999/2000 performance year with a trip to Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida, in February, 2000. The theme of this years show incorporates a number of contempory musical ideas of big band, Latin, pop, and jazz. Using songs from two contempory groups, "New York Voices" and "Take Six," the band has chosen three songs to present a musical collage of sound. The first, "Round Midnight," is an upbeat adaptation of the Thelonius Monk song and re-recorded by the "New York Voices." This song features trumpet & dance solos and incorporates light poles as a visual prop to tie the show and field together. The light poles will be used both in the guard equipment work and serve as a frame for the show. This song has the potential to evolve as the year progresses, with the visual execution changing and additions to be made. The second song, "My Friend," is a transcription of the "Take Six"collaboration with Ray Charles. This song features an alto saxophone solo to a big band backup. Many impact points in both drill and music provide an upbeat and sultry middle selection for the band. The third song, "Baroque Samba," has a single melodic line which will have the audience humming it after every performance. The contrapuntal technique used in the presentation, both musically and visually, will present the many sections of the band as they introduce their version of the melody. This song is also an adaption from the group, "New York Voices." The Blackhawk HS Band annually participates in the Bands of America Eastern Regional Marching Band Competition held each year at West Virginia University. The West Virginia Regional willl be held October 30, 1999. The band performed last year for the first time at BOA Grand Nationals, achieving a Division II rating. The Blackhawk HS Band also participates in the Torunament of Bands as a member of TOB's Chapter 8. The band has qualified to perform at TOB's Atlantic Coast Championships every year for the five years the band has participated in TOB competitons.
