It was a quiet afternoon in Colorado Springs. The afternoon train had pulled in a few minutes before and was unloading passengers onto the crowded wooden boardwalk. You step off the train and look around. You have heard of the beauty of the surrounding countryside, but have always wanted to see it for yourself. The Peaks were something to see, you have been told and a warm bath in the Hot Springs would be just the thing for that spot of rheumatis' that has been bothering you of late. You look around for the carriage that will take you to the chateau, but it is no where to be found. You inquire about the time the carriage will arrive from the man at the train depot and are told that the transport has lost a wheel and is being repaired. The proprietor has relayed a message that all guests should kindly wait in Grace's Café. The bill for you, a valued customer, would paid for complimentary of the hotel. You leave your luggage at the train depot and walk over to the café. A pretty, dark skinned woman asks you what you would like to have. You tell her that you will have whatever the specialty of the house is. "Meatloaf and cider is it," she says. The food arrives piping hot. It is delicious. You look around the town from the vantage-point of a clean wooden table. "This town sure has some interesting lookin' characters" you think to yourself. Maybe during my stay, I can find out some more about them. At this time, you ask for a refill of what turned out to be a very fine apple cider and begin observing.
