Goodbye National Tower

For many years the sky and landscape of Gettysburg National Military Park was marred by the huge National Tower. For almost as many years, the battle over this widely unpopular "landmark's" future raged. A victory was finally won by those who want to preserve as much of the 1863 look of the battlefield as possible. On July 3, 2000 the tower came crashing to the ground on it's first step to the scrap yard. The Mifflin Guard had just finished a three-day encampment near the Pennsylvania monument the day before and we were on hand for the historic moment.

Three Hurrah's!!!

Below is a somewhat shakey version of the tower coming down.
