135th Grant vs Lee

In June of 1999 about nine thousand or so reenactors traveled to Virginia to reenact some of the battles which pitted Grant against Lee in the late spring and summer of 1864. Battles known as The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor were among the bloodiest, hardest fought battles of the war. The reenactment took place on the site of the largest cavalry battle in North America - Brandy Station.

After becoming a casualty in the second set of Rebel trenches, I snapped the following photos of the "Mule Shoe" at Cold Harbor scenario.

Confederates pour out of the trenches to push the Federals back

The Confederate counter attack gets organized as the sun just breaks the ridge where the Union troops formed

Close fighting occurs while the Rebels attempt to retake the first breastworks

The fighting continues as the sun rises higher

Smoke fills the air as the fight rages
