Mifflin Guard Gettysburg Encampment 2000

Responding to an invitation from the National Park Service, the Mifflin Guard (including Co. K, 81st PVI) presented a two-day encampment on the grounds of Gettysburg National Military Park on July 1st & 2nd, 2000 to commemorate the anniversary of the battle. In addition to daily demonstrations of camp life, tactical drilling, marching and firing, the Guard participated in the ranger tour "Brig. Gen. Caldwell in the Wheatfield", which was broadcast on Pennsylvania Cable Network, and a portrayal of the charge of the 1st Minnesota. The ranger tour depicting the Wheatfield had special meaning to the 81st, Co. K reenactors because the original 81st PA fought in the Wheatfield. The encampment and demos drew large crowds all weekend and was enjoyed by the reenactors as well.

Drilling and Firing Demonstrations

The Mifflin Guard takes the field for drill.

Swinging into a line of battle.

Changing the brigade front.

...still changing.

Once there we fire a sharp volley...

...then fire by company...

...then independently.

The Gen. Caldwell Ranger Tour

Marching to the Wheatfield by the left flank. It was said that we were the first troops to march this offroad section of the field since the battle.

5th Company comprised of the 81st & 26th PA and the 33rd NJ on the march.

Another nice shot of the march.

Stopped at the fence while the ranger talks. Approximately 300-400 spectators accompanied us for the tour (they are just off camera to the right).

Over the wall!

5th Co. clears the wall.

We begin to swing into a battle line and enter the Wheatfield with a "regiment" of spectators on each side.

Cheering at the 61st NY monument. The 61st is also a member of the Guard - a special day for them as well.

Through the woods and up a "slight incline" toward the Rose farm!

Taking a rest at the top near the Rose property.

Charge of the 1st Minnesota

The following is a few shots depicting of the charge of the 1st Minnesota. The 1st Mn suffered 83% casualties on the charge. We were given slips of paper with our "fate" written on them so as to give a correct representation of the men lost.
