IT'S NEVER TOO LATE ....
The Misery of AIDS/HIV in Ethiopia"Unless this situation is
reversed, the social, economic and population impact on our peoples is going to be severe."
The effects of the AIDS epidemic is becoming most severe in our country, that's home to over 2.8 million HIV-infected people. Over 90% are between the ages of 15 and 49. Because of this, AIDS has decimated the most productive segment of our population i.e. our working population.
Words are hoplessly inadequate to describe the misery our generation is going to face in the next ten years. We're told sixty percent of our males aged 15-49 are expected to be wiped out by the year 2009 and even today thirty people a day die in Addiss ....(just rumors - I don't think so!) ..... hint hint ...do u know what that means.....Our generation is dying !!
It's even more sad that we still choose to pretend like we don't know. And so even to open dialogue on the epidemic to foster awareness among us ' the few fortunates ' seems to be too much to offer........atleast it is to some of us. This epidemic has spread largely in silence. Most people at home are reticent to discuss the disease openly, preferring to blame the deaths on other more socially acceptable ailments. Not enough attention has been paid to AIDS education, with only slight behavioral and attitudinal change.
Our cultural practices and social norms help to spread the disease and make it difficult for women and children in particular to protect themselves from being infected. Ofcourse war and poverty have contributed directly to the AIDS epidemic by creating conditions that foster its spread and by impeding the necessary attempts for its control.
To those of you that are willing tohelp but feel helpless because you do not not know of an effective way to help, don't feel helpless anymore..... recently
groups ( classical examples of caring individuals), far
away from home but close enough in heart, are willing to give back themselves to this dying generation. Not only are they willing to help themselves, but
also make it possible for all of us whom are willing to help too. I urge you to visit the following sites:
All it takes is a commitment of time - not a lot of
time- and the desire to make a difference, to be a part of their theme. So many tasks, so many people, millions of lives to be saved........together we can make a difference.
