Nicknamed "ABBA", Bruce Abernathy walked into the Port Adelaide side as a 16 year old in 1978 and quickly made his mark as a running player of the highest calibre.

Bruce Abernathy

After tasting premiership success in 1979, Abernathy had stints at Collingwood and North Melbourne before returning to Port Adelaide in 1985. His club Best and Fairest win in 1987 and his Jack Oatey Medal winning performance in the 1988 Grand Final ensured that recruiting scouts continued to entice him to return to the VFL. Instead, Abernathy was one of the first Adelaide Crows.

Health problems led to his early retirement but ABBA quickly found a niche as a highly respected television sports presenter.

Ackland, Cain
12 games, 3 goals (2001)

40 games, 12 goals (2000-2003)

Cain Ackland A stong marking ruckman, Ackland burst onto the AFL scene in 2001 with a number of excellent performances. The range of quality talls at Port's dispoal made it difficult for Ackland to find a toehold at the Power in 2002 but French's move to Carlton gives Ackland the opportunity to cement his AFL career in 2003.

Agius, Ross
53 games, 103 goals (1979-1984)

Vice-Captain of the 1979 All-Australian Teal Cup side, Agius failed to live up to his early explosive form.

Ahchee, Corey
85 games, 7 goals (2000-2003)

Best & Fairest 2002

From Alice Springs, Ahchee has slotted into the back line at Alberton well and has become a regular state representative. He added an extra string to his bow in 2002 by kicking the odd goal when moved forward.

Ahern, John
4 games, 2 goals (1992)

John "Horse" Ahern was an example of a Victorian recruit who failed to live up to expectations. Formerly of Melbourne and North Melbourne, Ahern found the competition for senior places tough going and by season's end was spending time on the bench in the seconds.

Ambrose, Richard
52 games, 29 goals (1994-1998)

Sandover Medallist 2000

Originally from Western Australia, Ambrose arrived at Port via a stint at Sydney. Ambrose kept supporters on his toes by mixing moments of brilliance on the field with simple mistakes. Still, supporters were sad to see him return to Perth, where he showed his value by winning the Sandover Medal with Subiaco.
