Mandatory reflective clothing, crash bars, helmet strobe lights, seat belts, and air bags; no-tamper exhaust laws, street bans, highway bans, neighborhood and town bans, refusal of service in restaurants, motels, and theaters, and mandatory special medical insurance may all be in your motorcycling future. Some government bureaucrats have already proposed every one of these ideas in some legislature or other; most of these stupid ideas are now being considered by our very own political leaders. Is this what you want for your future and for future generations of bikers? There is something you can do to prevent these attempts to rip-off your civil rights. You can get involved. The two main groups that are fighting for bikers’ rights are the AMA (American Motorcyclists Association) and ABATE (Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education).

It’s easy to join the AMA; just call their office in Ohio (below) or click on their link on any of Pocono Biker News’ links lists. With the AMA you pay your dues, receive your monthly magazine, read it, and occasionally write your legislators or governor while paid lawyers do most of the work, unless you also join an AMA registered club and/or participate in club events and activities.

If you join ABATE, and I suggest that you do, you will get much more involved in local and state level activities like rights rallies, letter-writing campaigns, visiting your state legislators’ offices, and fun stuff like helping to conduct toy-runs and pig-roasts etc. Clanmother was an ABATE member back when MAUL (Motorcyclists Against Unfair Legislation) first became ABATE (A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments). I think that was before Fred and Barney retired from the Mr. Slate's rock quarry.

There is an old saying: “Those who are not willing to fight for their freedom don’t deserve to have it”. So join NOW, or don’t bitch when they make you install training-wheels (called “outriggers” as tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) on your bike.
