This instructional unit encompasses several art lessons and an art appreciation
web-based search designed for 5th grade art students. The unit starts
with a self-portrait lesson that is teacher directed and will be used as
reference for all further study and projects. The sequence continues
with the study of the cubism style of art and particularly one of the cubist
founders, Pablo Picasso. One of the evaluative tools in the WebQuest
will be a hands-on project focusing on creating a cubist portrait.
The students will be asked to scan a drawn image, done in the cubist style,
into the computer and add color and patterns to the image with the computer
program, KidPix Deluxe. This last activity in the WebQuest can eventually
be used as a springboard to another unit on color theory, especially if
used with the 3-D color effects of Hyperstudio.
A culminating activity in this unit will be another portrait, using the
same drawing scanned from the computer and finished in a collage technique.
