David Aebischer was drafted 161st overall in the 1997 Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. He joined the Avalanche in 2000-01 as Patrick Roy's goaltending partner and made 20 saves in his first game on October 18. Eight nights later on October 26, David became the first Swiss goalie to record an NHL shutout. By year's end, David had helped the Avalanche win the Presidents' Trophy with a club record 52 wins and 118 points. His 2.29 goals-against average ranked ninth in the league. In the playoffs, he helped the Avalanche win both the Clarence Campbell Bowl and the Stanley Cup.
