Dan Blackburn was drafted tenth overall in the 2001 Entry Draft by the New York Rangers. That year, he won the Lars-Erik Sjöberg Award as the team's top rookie in training camp. On October 10, he made his NHL debut and made 37 saves in a 5-2 loss to the Capitals. On October 15, he earned his first win with 22 saves in a 2-1 win over the Canadiens.
