Fred Brathwaite signed as a free agent with the Edmonton Oilers on October 6, 1993 and made his NHL debut one week later on October 13. He played 19 games in his rookie season and won his first game on March 31, 1994. In the shortened 1994-95 season, Fred played 14 games. In 1995-96, he split the year between the AHL and the Oilers (7 games). After two years in the IHL, Fred returned to the NHL with the Calgary Flames after signing a contract on January 6, 1999. He made his NHL return on January 8, 2000 and recorded his first NHL shutout with 21 saves against the best team in the league, the Dallas Stars. Fred finished the 1998-99 campaign with a 11-9-7 record and won the Flames' Molson Cup (most three-star performances). In 1999-2000, Fred played a career-high 61 games and posted a 25-25-7 record. He won his first NHL Player of the Week honour on December 26 and set a team record with five shutouts by season's end. In 2000-01, Fred broke goaltending partner Mike Vernon's team record with 160:07 minutes of shutout hockey from March 25 to March 29. He played 49 games that season and posted a 2.32 goals-against average. On June 23, 2001, Fred was traded with Daniel Tkaczuk, Sergei Varlamov and a ninth-round draft pick to the St. Louis Blues for Roman Turek and a fourth-round draft pick. |
