Roman Cechmánek was drafted 171st overall in the 2000 Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. He made his NHL debut on October 17, 2000 with seven saves in a relief effort against the Senators. In only his third start for Philadelphia, Roman recorded his first NHL shutout as the Flyers blanked the Sabres 3-0 on November 4. Later that season, Roman posted a 12-game unbeaten streak (9-0-3) and won Player of the Week honours on January 15. Later that year, Roman participated in the mid-season All-Star Game in Colorado. At the end of the regular season, Roman was awarded the Flyers' Bobby Clarke Trophy (team MVP) after posting a 35-15-6 record. He ranked second in goals-against average (2.01), second in shutouts (ten) and fifth in save percentage (92.1).
