Marc Denis was drafted 25th overall in the 1995 Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. One season later, he made his NHL debut on December 7, 1996 against the Kings. After returning to junior and then spending a season in the minors, Marc played his next four NHL games (1-1-1) in 1998-99. In 1999-2000, Marc joined the Avalanche full-time as Patrick Roy's goaltending partner and recorded a 9-8-3 record with three shutouts and a 2.54 goals-against average. He recorded his first shutout on November 3 against the Blues. On June 7, 2000, Marc was traded to the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets for a second-round draft pick. In 2000-01, Marc posted a 3.25 GAA with a 89.5 save percentage. On December 11, he won NHL Player of the Week honours after posting a 2-0-1 record with a 1.58 GAA.
