Mike Dunham was drafted 53rd overall in the 1990 Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. In 1996-97, he made his NHL debut and played 26 games as the Devils won the Atlantic Division. That year, he won the Jennings Trophy with goaltending partner Martin Brodeur for lowest team goals-against average. In 1997-98, Mike played 15 games as the Devils won their second straight Atlantic Division title with a franchise record 48 wins and 107 points.
On June 26, 1998, Mike was claimed in the Expansion Draft by the Nashville Predators. In his first season with his new team, Mike played 44 games and won 16 games. In 1999-2000, he played 52 games and won 19 games. In 2000-01, Mike posted a 21-21-4 record with a 92.3 save percentage. He posted a 2.28 GAA with four shutouts in 48 games.
