Robert Esche was drafted 139th overall in the 1996 Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. On February 20, 1999, he made his NHL debut in a match against the Panthers. After playing two more NHL games that season, Robert played eight games at the NHL level in 1999-2000. That year, he won his first game on January 4 against the Mighty Ducks. In 2000-01, Robert joined the Coyotes full-time and played with goaltending partner Sean Burke. Robert played 25 games and recorded a 10-8-4 record with a 3.02 goals-against average.
