Jean-Sébastien Giguère was drafted 13th overall in the 1995 Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers. He made his NHL debut in 1996-97 and posted a 3.38 goals-against average in eight games. On August 25, 1997, Jean-Sébastien was traded with Andrew Cassels to the Calgary Flames for Trevor Kidd and Gary Roberts. After a full year in the minors, Jean-Sébastien made his debut with the Flames in 1998-99 and posted a 3.21 GAA in 15 games. In 1999-2000, Jean-Sébastien posted a 2.73 GAA in seven NHL games.
On June 10, 2000, Jean-Sébastien was traded to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for a second round draft pick. In his first season with his new team, he posted a 2.57 GAA with a 91.1 save percentage.
